HP Travan internal 5G cannot write to tape

All of a sudden our tape drive quit working. I downloaded and installed firmware upgrade 2.08 and Backup II version 8, but it didn't help. I just keep getting the error "This media cannot be written to. Please insert another media to continue". It does'nt matter if it's a recently used tape or a brand new one. I tried running the diagnostics on the tape drive and it says the tape can be read but not written to. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
