HP Ultrium-2 200/400GB Media Problems

Hi Experts,

I find that my HP ULTRIUM-2 200/400Gb tapes are showing frozen state. I use Veritas Netbackup for the backup operations. What is the significance of "frozen" state. Because of that My backup fails. Any idea.

Regards,
Syam

Re: HP Ultrium-2 200/400GB Media Problems

Hi,

I have never heard that "frozen" should apply to medias, it must be something specific for Netbackup. Perhaps similar to "Permanent protection" in DP. Or, that the media is frozen because that a copy exists. Can't you find anything in the Netbackup documentation.

Re: HP Ultrium-2 200/400GB Media Problems

Hi,

I understand that it is a netbackup term..but I want to know why the media is getting frozen and further backups are not allowed. Is this because netbackup find the media is bad?

Re: HP Ultrium-2 200/400GB Media Problems

I got the answer from NBUP troubleshooting guide.
FROZEN media state
If a volume is FROZEN, NetBackup keeps it indefinitely and can restore from it but not
use it for further backups or archives.

This is what it says.

Re: HP Ultrium-2 200/400GB Media Problems

This sounds very much like the Media Conditions factors as seen in Data Protector. You can configure or rather define the state of the media via conditions rules. Protecting the cartridge from overwrite or exceeding the conditions factors can cause spurious bad/poor media errors.

The actual FROZEN status is stored in the Media Database (MediaDB) of the media server that froze the media. Every media server (including the master) has its own unique Media Database (MediaDB).
MediaDB information, including the media status (Frozen, Full, Active), can be obtained using the bpmedialist command.
Media can only be unfrozen by using the bpmedia command. When media is unfrozen, the media server containing that frozen record should be specified in the command syntax. Media must be unfrozen one at a time.
A media being frozen does not necessarily mean that the media in question is defective. Freezing media is a safety measure taken by the NetBackup application to help prevent further errors, drive damage or possible data loss.
Investigate if there is any pattern to the media ID(s), tape drive(s) or media server(s) involved when media are frozen.
