Installation of HP Colorado External Travan Tape Drives in Windows XP

Hi Everyone,

As it seems to me everyone who used to have HP Colorado External Travan Tape Drives with pre-Win 2000 or pre-Win XP right now having problem to use it with Win 2K or Win XP.

Personally I have HP Colorado External 5GB Travan Tape Drive. I have tried to use HP Tape Backup Installation Guide for Win XP as per link c00000627 but I found these instructions very unhelpful.

I have installed Colorado Backup II v9.1 software which I have downloaded from HP website.
Instructions posted by HP somehow differ from downloaded version of Colorado Backup II v9.1 software when one tries to install it. It unclear where one should get Shuttle mpd driver and how to install it, as the downloaded version of Colorado Backup II v9.1 software did not contain Shuttle mpd driver.

This would be a great help if HP posted on the website some helpful links to correct drivers or software within ???Tape Backup Installation Guide in Win XP??? page - I am sure everyone would appreciate that.

I have tried to use HP Colorado External 5GB Travan Tape Drive in Win 2000 and it works only with MS Backup software which is part of Win 2000. But when I tried to use with Colorado Backup II v9.0 software it gave the following error message: ???Backup device not found. Ref: 03-15-41-02-0000???. I have posted this error message earlier on the forum but so far got no replies.

I would be grateful for any help or feedback on this issue.

Kind regards,

Paul Dubovik

Re: Installation of HP Colorado External Travan Tape Drives in Windows XP

Paul,

Version 9.1 of CBII is only for windows ME and will not function properly under any other opperating system. For windows 2000 you can use version 9.0 without any problem, The shuttle port driver is installed with both windows and CBII and ins not availible seperatly for Windows 2000. For windowsXP, follow these steps with the tape drive disconnected. Intall EITHER CBII v9.0 OR STOMP BackupMyPC (http://www.stompinc.com). Personnaly I have had much more luck with STOMP but it can be done with V9.0 of CBII NOT v9.1. Download but do not install driver package for windows 2000 (ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/information_storage/software/win2kdrivers.exe) and unzip to a temporary folder that you can rememeber. Restart the machine if prompted to complete the installation.

Next shut down the machine and connect the hard drive, when the machine boots it will detect the drive (this could take a few minutes). When promted, direct the install wizard to the folder where you unziped the drivers. Complete the process and reboot. The following attached document should help you or feel free to ask more questions

Re: Installation of HP Colorado External Travan Tape Drives in Windows XP

Joey,

Thank you very much for your help. I have downloaded STOMP BackupMyPC software for Windows 2000 PC and seems that it has done the job. As for the CBII V9.0 it didn???t work properly on Windows 2000 or XP PCs.

Thanks for the above info.

I have a 20GB Colorado and cant get it going.
The stomp software does not support the 20GB drive.
Taken from the stomp site

Any other ideas for this. At the moment I cant back up and am very nervous!

Re: Installation of HP Colorado External Travan Tape Drives in Windows XP

I gave up in the end.

The Colorado does not want to operate on my Dell/xp machine at all. In the end I purchased a Maxtor hard Drive and with the back up facility in XP pro it works very well. I also disconnect the hard drive when not in use, in case of lightning!

Re: Installation of HP Colorado External Travan Tape Drives in Windows XP

I have a similar problem - but with Win2003 server. Has anybody managed to get a HP Colorado 5GB drive to be recognised by Win2003 server?

I can't even find a driver to use....

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Travan tape drives were never supported in any of the Microsoft Server products
