MSA500 and Hotplug Dat72
I'm trying to get this working.
I have 2 DL360G3 servers, with SA-532 controllers, connected to a MSA500 where
the Hotplug Dat 72 is in.
When i try to backup with veritas 9.1 ( or NT Backup ) the backup is cancelled instantly.
Veritas reports error 45d , Device IO error.
The tape unit is already replaced.
Somebody any idees.
p.s. is this configuration supported, i cannot find it on the websites of hp.

Re: MSA500 and Hotplug Dat72
I have checked the user manual (240333-004) from October 2003. It says:
"The MSA500 system supports the Universal Hot-Plug Tape drive (AIT and DDS-4 types) for data storage and backup. The option supports Microsoft and Novell operating systems in various configurations. For specific Universal Hot-Plug Tape drive configurations, refer to the HP website
www.hp.com/products/sharedstorage
"
There is also a warning that you have to install a drive height converter (a filler for airflow), but are not allowed to remove it afterwards.

Re: MSA500 and Hotplug Dat72
Are you building a cluster? I have never see DDS tape as a shared resource in a cluster.
Also I'm not sure BackupExec from veritas support DDS on Array controllers, you should check the compatibility list from Veritas. Multipath SW is also an issue, you will see two tape per server, and it is not supported.
You probably could use the DAT72 Hotplug on a MSA500 connected to just one server with single path.
I have not found info on the HP site for this, and if you found please post it here

Re: MSA500 and Hotplug Dat72
I am a colleague of Louis van Belle and I can confirm we are not building a cluster in this configuration.
The servers are configured in a standby-recovery option.
Therefor only 1 server is working at one time.
The other server stands waiting in standby mode to take over when an error is detected in the first server.
The errors first gave us the idea to replace the tape drive. So just to be sure, we replaced the tape drive, but the error stayed.
We have almost the same configuration with another client and they are experiencing the same problem. They however have an AIT tape drive (hotplug in a storage cluster) and are running Arcserve. But they get simular errors when they try to make a backup
We are really stuck here.
