Problems with tape drive blowing up SCSI Chain

I have a C1537 that I took out of my old server and transferred to my new one. It works fine in the old box and on a temp server that I tested it on. But when I attach this device to the SCSI chain on my new server, it screws everything up. With the tape drive attached my SCSI adapter won't even scan for other SCSI devices, it just hangs at the BIOS screen. If I remove the drive, everything works fine.

I have removed everything from the SCSI chain except the tape drive and it still doesn't work.

I have checked SCSI ID's (running on 3). I have tried all forms of termination via the dip switches.

I don't have the manual for this drive anymore, so I don't know what all the other dip switches are for or if they would have an effect on any of this.

Thanks for any help.

Re: Problems with tape drive blowing up SCSI Chain

a couple of things. The dip switches, by default, are all set to "on" except number 3. Termination is handled by using a terminated cable. You probably don't want the tape drive on the same bus as the hard drive. What HBA do you have?

Re: Problems with tape drive blowing up SCSI Chain

Thanks for the reply. Right now all the dip switches are ON, I'll set 3 to off and try it.

Also, to correct myself, the termination I tried was with the jumpers.

The controller I'm attempting this on (albeit on the same chain as the HD's) is a Dell Perc 4/im Raid Controller....can i say that on HP's site ;)

Thanks again.

Hey Jeff, definitely get it off that RAID controller, You need a dedicated HBA

You are probably getting cofused with TERM POWER and Termination. This document is quite useful on answering some questions:

As my mate Lewis says, we don't support any RAID cards except for the very latest HP ones. You don't need a very fast HBA to run a DAT24 (C1537) an old adaptec 2940UW will do the trick.

Totally Agree with Lewis - you'll want to isolate that drive on it's own SCSI controller an older Adaptec 2940UW should do the trick :-) or the Adaptec 29160LP controller which is offered by HP
