SDLT won't accept DLT tapes

Hi
Can anyone help me get to the bottom of a tape Drive problem> We have an HP Super DLT II 600GB tape drive and it won't read our old 40 / 80Gb tapes. It just spits them out as soon as they are put in the drive?

The SDLT600 drive is only read compatable with:

SDLT320
SDLT220
VS160
