ssl1016 dlt autoloader

I have installed ssl1016 dlt autoloader
on win2003 server (32bit) using hp storage works tape and automation driver installer.
Tape drive works fine, but any media changer is not listed in device list.
Any suggestion?

Re: ssl1016 dlt autoloader

Hi,

Are you using dedicated scsi controller for you tape? I would suggest using an separate scsi.

Confirm that the SCSI Cable is properly rated for the loader/tape drive and terminated adequately.

Also, what kind of backup software 'ur using?
If you found "unknown media changer,or any unconfigured loader devices from device list,d'r should be no problem 'coz 3rd party software will still able to configure your devices (both loader and tape). Make sure that upon booting, your drive and loader are detected from bios initialize.

Re: ssl1016 dlt autoloader

What type of HBA do do have autoloader configured on?

There is no "DLT" 1016, but there is a DLT1 version, which I'll assume is what you have.

The 1016 DLT1 (and SDLT) autoloaders only use one SCSI ID. The autoloader and drive share an ID, with the drive at LUN 0, and the autolader at LUN 1.

Usually if the autoloader is not discovered, it is due to the HBA not supporting - or the HBA not having enabled - multiple (other than Zero) LUN support.

Thanks.

reply to David HP

The HBA which autoloader is configured on is LSI 1030.
Indeed, backup device type is ssl1016 dtl1 autoloader.

I'll check LUN Level of HBA

Re: ssl1016 dlt autoloader

I can't find any info on an LSI Logic "1030" HBA. If it's a SCSI RAID controller, quite often they do NOT support SCSI LUNs.

The supported HBAs with the 1016 DLT1 autoloader are listed in the EBS compatability matrix:
ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/products/storageworks/techdoc/ebs/EBSMatrix-0204.pdf

The supported LSI HBAs are the 22915, 22903, and the 8951 (under Windows).

Re: ssl1016 dlt autoloader

Hi,

If I'm not mistaken, your using LSI53C1030 controller(ultra 320 SCSI). What brand of pc/server is involed? In "SOME" cases, PCI slots are making your loader not discovered.
You should place your controller card into particular slot that will able to recognize both your drive and loader.

Re: ssl1016 dlt autoloader

Ok, as I understand it, the LSI53C1030 is not a SCSI HBA, but rather a dual channel Ultra320 chip that would be loaded on the motherboard.

Technically it's not a tested/supported configuration (as mentioned above).

If the drive (LUN 0) is seen, and the autoloader (LUN 1) is not, then the issue is SCSI LUN support, and not which PCI slot you are using.

According to the LSI documentation (http://www.lsilogic.com/files/support/ssp/fusionmpt/Win2000/symmpi2k10911.txt) it says:

The SYMMPI.SYS miniport driver supports these features:
o Supports multiple Logical Unit Numbers (LUNs)

So, it should be able to communicate with the autoloader at LUN 1. However, I didn't see anything that stated how to enable multiple LUN support.

Re: ssl1016 dlt autoloader

Hi David,

What i'm trying to say is that the involved controller is LSI53C1030, it consist of four types of SCSI adapters (lsi21320, lsi21320-r, lsi22320, and lsi22320-r)

Re: ssl1016 dlt autoloader

Allan,

OK, that make's sense. It wasn't clear from the customer's posting whether it was a physical SCSI card, or an embedded controller.

I looked through the ultra320 LSI manual:
http://www.lsilogic.com/files/docs/techdocs/storage_stand_prod/SCSIboards/Ultra320.pdf

and it makes no reference to SCSI LUN support (or enabling LUN support). So potentially the chip supports it, but the cards do not. I sent an email to LSIlogic support - we'll see if I get a reply.

Alex,

If you could clarify which HBA you have (or if this is an embedded controller), that would help.

Re: ssl1016 dlt autoloader

I checked one other document - the quick hardware setup guide. It says the cards support "up to 15 devices", which just happens to be the number of SCSI IDs available (one is used by the host). This would tend to imply that the LUNs are not supported (which would give you access to more than 15 devices on a wide SCSI bus).
The journey IS the reward.

Re: ssl1016 dlt autoloader

The server of whitch i'm speaking is
an IBM x445, and scsi controller is an
53c1030 integrated onto the IBM motherboards supported by IBM.

iT ShoulD bE working, otherwise try to use another SCSI (Utra2,160,320) under PCI.
