SSL1016 SDLT autoloader + W2K + Netbackup 3.4 problem

I have a veritas netbackup datacenter 3.4 media master that I cannot get to recognize the autoloader portion of the new surestore, but veritas does see the drive itself. It shows it as a standalone and will not allow me to configure it as a robot, only a standalone drive. Any ideas what is wrong? Thanks in advance.

do you have both power switches on?

Also do you have LUN support enabled on your SCSUI controller?

Re: SSL1016 SDLT autoloader + W2K + Netbackup 3.4 problem

How can I tell if the LUN setting is enabled on my controller (Smart Array 5i on DL380G3)? I believe both power switches are on, when I ejected the carts and loaded them back in it scanned through the tapes and I even used the web interface to mount a tape to the drive. Wouldn't that indicate the loader has power? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Re: SSL1016 SDLT autoloader + W2K + Netbackup 3.4 problem

I just found something very interesting when I was going to apply the firmware updates. When viewed in L&TT, the drive shows up, the autoloader does not. I have attached a jpg of the interface showing no listing for the autoloader. Any ideas why it isn't there? When I selected the firmware, it shows that "No matching device" message. Thanks for any ideas.

What is needed for the SDLT autoloader is SCSI LUN support - the ability to talk to LUNS other than 0. The autoloader will be at LUN 1, whereas the drive is LUN 0 (the default LUN).

I'm not an expect on Smart Array adapters, but my guess from looking over the spec and documentation is that it does not support LUNs. It's intended for attaching discrete SCSI hard drives, will will not use LUNs (that card is really for doing RAID on disks).

If the SSL1016 is supported on this card, it might be only in 'stacker' mode, where the autoloader advances to the next tape whenever the application unloads a tape. In stacker mode, the host only talks to the drive (LUN 0).

So, that's my guess on the Smart Array card and support of the SSL1016. I would suggest using an separate non-RAID SCSI card, such as an adpatec 29160 or HP 154457-B21 for the autoloader. These support LUNs.

Yes :-)

The fact that LTT sees only the drive indicates that LUN mode is not enabled (and perhaps not supported by the Smart Array). The drive and autoloader use the same SCSI controller, with the LUN used to address the individual devices.
The journey IS the reward.

I can confirm that attaching the SSL to the raid controller is not supported -- nor advised - do you really want to thrash your array & try to backup at the same time?

you'll need to purchase a separate SCSI card & shift the autoloader across.
