Surestore Tape 5000

I have a Surestore Tape 5000 that I have hooked up to an XP computer. It is recognized by the SCSI card on bootup. I downloaded the software hp_ltt_install_support.exe (5.0 MB) from the HP website, and installed it.

It appears to have installed fine.

What did I install?

I thought it would be a utility to do backup and recovery from the tape drive. I have a need to check an old tape to see if I can recover some software, and would not like to spend a lot of money on software to get it off the tape.

Is there a link on HP that would direct me to software I could download that would allow me to recover the tape, or failing that, freeware somewhere that would do the same?

This unit is not going to be used again, and I'd hate to throw money at this especially if the tape doesn't have the data I'm looking for.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Surestore Tape 5000

What you installed was the Library and Tape tools diagnostic which is nothing more then a test tool and not capable of doing backups. If you're trying to restore something you probably need to know what software was used for the original back up. Since those tapes didn't hold too much it might be worth it to contact a data recovery company and they can tell what, if anything, is on the tapes and you can make the decision whether or not to retrieve it. Re: Surestore Tape 5000

So if I understand you correctly, there is no universal DAT backup format, and it is entirely dependent on what software was used?

Rats.

Well, if I know me, (and there are days I don't) I would have used what was packaged with the drive. Do you (or anyone out there) know what that might have been?

Thanks!

Re: Surestore Tape 5000

You need a backup application to move the data from the system to the drive.

Depending on your version of XP, it might have it's own backup application built in under program > accessories >

If not then post your email adress here and I'll find you a copy of the current inbox software that should do the trick.

Re: Surestore Tape 5000

The XP backup/restore worked great. Unfortunately, the files weren't there. :(

Thanks everyone so much for the help - y'all rock.
