Tape being reported as write protected

Sometimes my software reports the tape as being write protected when it is not. I have taken the tape out and toggeled the write protection tab to correct this but I would like to know what is going on. The software I have experienced this with are WindowsXP's BACKUP and Netware6's SBCON. My tape drive is HP Surestore DAT24e C5653-69202 (C1537A)

sounds like a problem with the media recognition switches.

Are you still in warranty ?
