Tapeware error 549
I have a DLT70 external backup drive (SCSI) operated through Tapeware XE v7. My operating system is XP Pro.
I have recently had a serious crash involving loss of a hard drive containing all my recent digital pics and various ebooks, etc. The data has been backed up but unfortunately the Tapeware database was lost along with the hard drive.
I have tried to use the Device-Restore Database option in Tapeware but was dismayed to find that Tapeware could not read the backup tape containing my data. The error message was 549 - 'Block size is larger.....'. I have been through the FAQs on the HP site and tried changing block size specified in twtapdev.ini, first to 65536 bytes, then to 131072, but I get the same error message.
On going through my other backup tapes I have discovered that of 5 tapes, 2 give the '549' error message, 2 produce an 'unrecognized media' message and only one (containing old data) reads OK and produces a restored database.
No error messages were shown when the original backups were being performed.
Could anyone please advise any further things I can try to recover my data.

Re: Tapeware error 549
Error Number 549 â Block size is too large
Description: Block size is larger than maximum physical transfer or possibly even the buffer. This may be accommodated by adding or changing some parameters in the TapeWare.ini under the section for this device. If autodetect has been used, it may be necessary to add a section using the device name assigned by autodetect as the contents of the section header.
so far you've tried 64k, you need to go smaller with the block size

Re: Tapeware error 549
Hi Lewis. Thank you for your reply. Tapeware was set to the 32k default before I tried increasing it. Do you suggest I try going below this, e.g. to 16k or 8k?

Re: Tapeware error 549
can't hurt. It already doesn't work so you won't lose ground
