Troubles installing Tape library.

Hi!

Thanks for trying to help me.

I am trying to install new HP SureStore E 20/700 Tape Library, connected through FiberBridge and two Fiberhubs to Fiber Chanel Mass Storage Adapter on D Class Hp server with HP-UX 11.00 and Omniback II 4.0 installed on it.

Library robotics is accessible, I can move cartriges from one location to another, I can load cartridge in drive but I can not do something with this drive. When I try Scan in Omniback II, for example, I got this message:

Re: Troubles installing Tape library.

Have you verified that you have the correct drivers installed for the Drives and auto changer?

Re: Troubles installing Tape library.

There was no any driver in complectation.
I can not find any LTO driver for HP-UX.
There is no any word about driver in manuals.

As I undersand it is not necessary to install driver on HP-UX for Ultrium-LTO support.

Am I wrong?

Re: Troubles installing Tape library.

There is additional problem with LTO drives:

----- after uma -ioctl
> move S2 D2
> move S3 D3
> move D3 S3
move: Medium not present.
> move D2 S2
move: Medium not present.
------------------------------------
cartriges "stick" in drives...
Why?
Can anybody give me some idea?
Thanks.

Re: Troubles installing Tape library.

Hi there.
You have to take the cartridge out manually.
Press the release button on the drive and then take the tape out.
Do an ioscan for the devices, whether they are claimed or not. This one drive is not really recognized as far as i can see.
Check the interfaces with the stm ( Support Tool Manager ).

Thanks Alexander.
But devices are CLAIMED.

Re: Troubles installing Tape library.

Hi Robert,

I cannot stress enough about having the right
firmware installed for your hardware.

DLT8000 (V59
Tape Library (2.36)
Bridge (2006y)

http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/ support_doc/lpg50028.html

Do not try to load firmware into the library yourself, you can blow up the board at the front of the tape library... Let HP do it... If they stuff it, they can fix it.

Re: Troubles installing Tape library.

Hi,

You can try this to get the tapes out of
the drives like this. The problem is that
your drive(s) need to be in an off-line state
in order to do so. You can try using uma to
do this but I can never get it to work using
the 'uma -ioctl /dev/robot -dev /dev/rmt/1m'
option(s), so I use 'mt' instead.

# mt -t /dev/rmt/1m rew
# mt -t /dev/rmt/1m offl

Go back to your 'uma' session and move the
tape again.

/dev/robot> mv D2 Sxxx

Re: Troubles installing Tape library.

Thanks, no result...

MT:
# mt -t /dev/scsi/bkp-lto1 rew
rewind 1 failed: Invalid argument
# mt -t /dev/scsi/bkp-lto1 offl
offline 1 failed: Invalid argument

UMA:
/dev/scsi/bkp-lib> stat D2
501 D2 Full "" "" from S1
/dev/scsi/bkp-lib> move d2 s1
move: Medium not present.

I have upgraded firmware (downloaded from hp.com).
:(((
for now I do not know what to do...

Re: Troubles installing Tape library.

Isn't there something built into either the tape commands or kernel which says that all tape devices must be under /dev/rmt ? Try using the device files under there...

Re: Troubles installing Tape library.

This is from the mt(7) man page:

It is recommended that all tape device files be put in the /dev/rmt
directory. All tape device files using extended configuration options
must be put in the /dev/rmt directory. This is required for proper
maintenance of the property table. Device files using a extended
configuration options located outside the /dev/rmt directory may not
provide consistent behavior across system reboots.

Re: Troubles installing Tape library.

Problem seems to be resolved...
I don't know...
Because I did a mistake. I uploaded to library old firmware (0165). This release do not know anything about LTO drives.
I can not upload anything newer than 0170 (0230,0236). Flash97.exe program, which came with library, successfully uploads 0165 and 0170 releases, but after (I mean at the end of image file sending) 0230 or 0236 uploading the error message is beeing displayed:
"System or communication error"! On library LCD the same: "Dowload failed! Re-load firmware! DO NOT RESET LIBRARY!" I can only upload again 0170...:((

HP-UX STM tries to upload HP provided updates, but after 2% of sending library returns message:
-------------------------------------------
Sense Key: 0x05 (ILLEGAL REQUEST)
Additional Sense Code/Qualifier: 0x24/00

Error Description:
There was an illegal field specified in the CDB.
-------------------------------------------

How can I upload new firmware (at least 0230) in HP SureStore E Tape Library 20/700??

Re: Troubles installing Tape library.

Hi Robert,

Suggest you get hold of V2.36 of the firmware
for the tape library. We had many problems prior
to 2.36 being loaded. You load it through the
ethernet port at front of the unit. If you
have support agreements for your tape library
get HP to do it. If something goes wrong....
you have a HP engineer to fix it. Firmware
can be diabolical. We had HP load ours from
2.00 to 2.30 (long story) and they blew up
the system board at the front!

Re: Troubles installing Tape library.

Hi Robert,

Behind the front right hand door is
a panel that reads like this:

Feature Model --> has DB9 port
CSE--> RJ45 (Customer Service Engineer?)
TEST --> RJ45 (no idea what this for)
SER1 --> RJ45
SER2 --> RJ45
ENET --> RJ45 (the one I was talking about)

HP engineer plugged his laptop into this
port, so he could get onto the network.
From here he updated the firmware, so he
could see what was going on....

Re: Troubles installing Tape library.

A the last HP engeneer installed firmware for me. Other problems are resolved.

Thanks to Michael and Duncan and everyone else, who helped me to understand how all this stuff works!
