Ultrium 215 / Arcserve 9
We have upgraded to Arcserve 9.0, when we do a full backup of the system (Approx 150 GB) we receive a message "Failed to rewind media" and the system is locked up. Arcserve and the Tape drive is installed on Netware 6.0 SP2. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Thanks,

Wich SCSI controller do you use? Update firmware and drivers. Update drive's firmware also using LTT http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/support_doc/lpg50128.html .
Check for common SCSI problems - cable length/quality, terminators are in place

Re: Ultrium 215 / Arcserve 9
Failure to rewind may mean the tape drive has failed to detect the end of tape sensor, and has off loaded the entire tape onto the drive mechanism, in which case the tape is hosed, and the drive will have to be disassembled to remove and discard all the thousands of feet of tape. It may have nothing to do with the ArcServe software at all (although I would not be too sure of that based on all the misery I have with this product!). I assume you are using a DLT type tape for that capacity, and I have lost several of these tapes for exactly this reason, and in each case the tape drive unit has had to be replaced (which is why you have service contracts!). Hope this helps,
David

Re: Ultrium 215 / Arcserve 9
We are using LTO tape technology we can still read the backup that it has done up till the point when we gat the error. I think it is something to do with the Firmware of the drive or something with the Arcserve Software. It is a bit of a worry about having to get new DLT tape drives, we certainly have never had this problem with DLT Tape drives. We use HP DLT and Ultium LTO both seem pretty good. I can defenatly recomend LTO for the speed of backups........
