I have an external HP Surestore Ultrium 215 backup tape drive. The Use Cleaning Cartridge light is blinking and I cannot get it to go out. I've tried the cleaning tape that came with the drive as well as 2 other brands (TDK and a new HP one) and every time I insert the cleaning tape, the drive immediately spits the tape back out and the tape error and cleaning light start blinking. I then have to power down the drive just to reset the tape error light.

Solution
You might have a LTO universal cleaning cartridge (UCC), and you don't have a high enough version of firmware.
UCC support was added around in early 2002.
You should have at least N23D firmware, but N26D is preferred (it has some additional fixes for correct handling of UCC).
Use HP Library & Tape Tools (www.hp.com/support/tapetools) to check an update your firmware revision.

The journey IS the reward.
