ultrium 230 backup slow
Just setup an Ultrium 230 on a Compaq DL380. It takes 2 hrs 15 min to backup approximately 22gb. Originally used the internal controller, then upgraded to a 64bit / 66mhz single channel scsi ultra3 and it made absolutely no diff. Just got through testing the drive with the hp library and tape tools and it says the server is not streaming data to the tape. Any ideas ?

Re: ultrium 230 backup slow
Can you configure the block size in your backup software. The block size can have a large impact on the data transfer rate. 64KB is good, bigger is better.
Also, the type of data you are backing up makes a difference (smaller files are harder / slower to back up).
Another factor is file system fragmentation. A heavily fragmented file system can be hard to back up.
Generally your host should send data to the drive at a rate of 6MB/s or bigger in order for the drive to maintain streaming performance.
You can also check out the PAT tool from the HP web site which attempts to analyze the host and its ability to provide data fast enough
