Ultrium 448
I have a proliant dl380 g4 with an external ultrium 448 tape drive connected through a single channel scsi hba and it just won't work.
In LT&T I can run the media analysis and connectivity test. However the read/write tests fail and data protector express won't backup or even format a tape.
Any help would be great,
Thanks
Steve

Re: Ultrium 448
Couple of things to be noted here:
1. The External Ultrium 448 tape drive connected to a single channel SCSI HBA: Is this a PCI slot (isolated) SCSI HBA. If so, is it a Single channel Ultra320 SCSI HBA G2?
2. What are you running for an OS?
3. Also it is to be noted that The HP ProLiant DL380 G4 does not have a suitable integrated SCSI controller for connecting the HP StorageWorks Ultrium 448 . For recommended HBA's please see
http://www.hp.com/products1/storage/compatibility/tapebackup/ISS/Detail/16-0029-0059.html
2. You said you ran L&TT and conducted the read/write test (which eventually failed). Did you happen to take a look at the test results/operations log to see as to why read/write test failed? If not, do try to re-run the test and kindly make a note of the errors posted.
3. What kind of media are you using, is it an HP Ultrium 2 data cartridge (400 GB)? Do let us know.
Thanks
Satish

Re: Ultrium 448
If you check the quickspecs for the DL380G4 you will see the supported SCSI controllers for this server under Options---Storage Controller, and under Options-Tape Drives you will see the supported Ultrium.
Also this page will help you a lot with your config:

Re: Ultrium 448
Thanks for the replies -
The server runs Windows 2000 server.
The SCSI HBA is the single channel G2 and it's sitting in the server's pci-x slot. I've also tried the slot next to it which is plain pci.
The tapes are the ultrium 2 tapes (400Gb)
I'll have some data on the L&TT tests soon, sorry for the delay!
Thanks

Re: Ultrium 448
OK...the SCSI card is supported by both, the server and the tape drive...all of your hardware supports each other....
1. Now do you see any errors in POST,
2. Is the tape drive and card recognized in POST?.
3. Have you changed the terminator, and or cable?
4. Is the tape drive and SCSI recognized properly in Windows?
5. What happends if you do a backup from Windows own backup program?
6. What about the SCSI, is set properly?, have you tried with another SCSI ID?
7. Have you tried connecting the tape drive on the optional external SCSI connector in the back of the DL380G4? just to see what happends? (The external External SCSI (VHDCI) connector)?
