Ultrium 460 - strange behavior
I have an unused (it came out of an HP factory sealed box) Ultrium 460 tape drive, model #Q1512, which I am installing to replace/upgrade a Compaq SDLT 220, but I'm having trouble with it.
Dell PowerEdge 2300
Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition with SP1
Adaptec 29160 host adapter
Backup Exec v10.1 (10d)
Compaq SDLT 220 (the drive being replaced)
During the startup scanning portion of Tape Tools v4.2, the progress bar gets about 67% done then the system reboots. I get this message in the EventVeiwer log.
Error code 000000d1, parameter1 50481002, parameter2 00000008, parameter3 00000000, parameter4 f74e9040.
Additional EventViewer log are messages indicating that the Adaptec 29160 controller was "not ready for access" and "did not respond within the timeout period".
In BackupExec, the drive showed as Ready, but "not idle" so even though it was not running any jobs, it was not responding to new job requests.
I ran Quantum's xTalk v5.5 and got an error when trying to retrive compressions status.
I have run a cleaning tape through the drive twice.
Both the SDLT 220 (which works fine) and the Ultrium 460 have the latest firmware and are using the latest Veritas device drivers. These are not Windows signed, but they are recommended for use with the BackupExec software.
Here's why I think there is a problem with the drive.
- I get the same results when connected to an Adpatec AHA-2940U2W SCSI host adapter.
- I reconnected the SDLT 220 tape drive and successfully ran BackupExec, Tape Tools, xTalk and did not get any SCSI time out errors in the Event Viewer.
Before I try and get the drive serviced, are there any troubleshooting steps I may have missed?
Many thanks.
Brian
