Useless boat anchor.

Useless boat anchor.

I have an HP SureStore T20 tape backup drive. It worked fine with Win 98. But the software that came with it, doesn't recognize the WinXP os, so that renders this drive useless. And HP has stopped supporting it, according to it's web site.

From what I read, this lack of support has created many people very disappointed and angry. You can count me in as one of those people. This gives me second thoughts about further purchases from this company. A good piece of hardware, and the company won't supply the proper drivers to make it usable with XP!

Here is 9.1 for download:

Hope this helps. -john

Re: Useless boat anchor.

You didn't mention which T20 tape drive you have but I suspect it is the SCSI version? While the Colorado Software doesn't work in XP except with certain tape drives you should certainly be able to use it in the native backup application that comes with XP as long as your SCSi controller is supported and recognized. The reason the tape drives are no longer supported is because they went out of production in 2001. In the world of computers, nothing lasts forever.

Re: Useless boat anchor.

Yes, I have a SCSI device, but I don't understand how it could operate without the Colorado software, in WinXP.
My ultimate goal at the moment is to use the tape drive in a Win98 box. But I want to backup the XP Pro server, howver, Win98 can't access the network to the XP box. No matter what I tried, I can't break the password barrier. So I can't backup the XP box from the Win98 box. I then tried to access (which I can) the Win98 box from the XP box, and tried to run the machine that way, to backup the XP box, but that didn't work. The borrowed files that I installed in the XP box complain about missing dates, and whatnot.
Yea, I know, this is a mess. Thanks for your reply. And as for the links, I'll go check on those. Thanks.

Re: Useless boat anchor.

Update:

The HP website for the 9.1 Colorado software no longer works. The link is disabled on the HP web site.

Re: Useless boat anchor.

Hi,

The link that John posted,

Here is 9.1 for download:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?locale=en_USтМй=English+%28US%29&pnameOID=12504&prodSeriesId=63937&prodTypeId=12169&basePartNum=COL2296&locBasepartNum=co-10418-1&os=Microsoft+Windows+ME&tech=Application

works for me. When I click on the download button, the file transfer starts. Check your browser settings if you are having issues with it.

Cheers,

Re: Useless boat anchor.

Thanks, I'll try again. I downloadd something further down on that site with no problems, but that one button wasn't responding, and the download manager kept on informing me that it couldn't find the link that it was pointing to. I tried it four times before giving up. I figured that since HP doesn't support this tape drive anymore, that they are starting to dismantle their site.

Cheers!
