Using DDS1 and DDS2 media in DDS3 drive, should I be concerned?
I've recently begun using an HP Surestore DDS3 tape drive. The documentation advises to use "mostly" DDS3 media. I have several hunderd DDS1 (90 meter) and DDS2 (120 meter) tapes that I would like to continue to use. Does anyone have experience with this situation? Am I asking from trouble with my tape drive if I don't replace all tapes with the newer DDS3 media?

Hi there.
Don't throw away your old tapes.
They should work fine with your new DDS3 drive.
We have DDS3 drives in some HP9000 servers and write data to DDS2 and DDS tapes with these.
No problem. Only one thing with the drives :
MTBF not too good ( less than DDS2 drives ).

Re: Using DDS1 and DDS2 media in DDS3 drive, should I be concerned?
The only difference I believe is that DDS1 and DDS2 tapes are 'rough' for DDS3 drive. I remember LTT utility, if you use these tapes too often, says 'overusage of DDS1 and DDS2 tapes!'.
This is not optimal to use these tapes in DAT24 drive, but will work. Do not forget to regularly clean drive - after each 5 full backups or 20 tape pulling hours
