Windows 2000 crashes when Travan 20GB is connected

Hi,

I tried to install my Travan 20GB external tape drive on Windows 2000.
The driver proved to be outdated, so installation was aborted.

I then downloaded a new driver from HP, and tried to install that one, but something is wrong.

Whenever I connect my tape drive and boot up, Windows crashes, just after the desktop appears.
I briefly get a blue screen, then the PC reboots, only to generate the same error over and over again.

Windows boots normally when the drive is not connected.
I tried to uninstall the driver, but somehow some files are not deleted, so the "New Hardware" wizard doesn't appear when I connect the tape drive, it just installs the driver I had previously tried to remove.

Does anyone know what could be the problem here?

Thanks in advance.

I downloaded and installed the driver you mentioned, but to no avail.

I now get a blue screen during boot, telling me the file \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\qic157 can't be found.

When I disconnect the tape drive, Windows boots up normally.

Re: Windows 2000 crashes when Travan 20GB is connected

Purchasing HP Travan tape backup seems to be a big mistake for many of us. HP has decided not to support it for Windows XP, so a $600 piece of equipment is now useless. My system crashed several times also (Windows XP)because there is no driver available. And I tried HP suggested to go to another site, but they also don't support the product. Unfortunately, you may be in the same boat with many of us who bought HP only to have them stop short of true support
Good luck.

I have win2k pro and travan 8Gb external working with these and colorado backup II 9.0 ...
Check readme file. You can also copy the file(s) your system miss in the specific locations manually and then restart.

Re: Windows 2000 crashes when Travan 20GB is connected

Are you using the blue installation CD that came with the tape drive? Do you have the newest version of Windows Media Player installed? (version 9.0). Believe it or not, Windows Media Player 7.1 makes it very difficult to install the tape drive on Windows 2000, but when I upgraded to Windows Media Player 9.0 the problems disappeared. I just used the installation CD and followed the directions that came with the tape drive exactly, and the installation went very smoothly. (Again, only once I upgraded to Media Player 9.0). The drivers on the website just caused more problems for me, I would stick with the installation CD. Good luck.
