Windows 2003 Backup Error

Windows 2003 Backup Error

I have 3 servers with diffent tape units.
Ultrium - 1, DAT72 and DAT 20/40.

All have been recently installed with Windows 2003 Server & all the latest patches.
Tape Drives are brand new and the tapes as well! Servers were installed with SMARTSTART 7.10 and a licensed CD of Windows 2003 Server.

When I run ntbackup, it back's up all the data but in the end of the backup I get a Device error. Also the backup log has the same exact message on all 3 servers. I use the administrator account with ALL the NTFS permissions and it gives the same error!

Re: Windows 2003 Backup Error

you can test your drives with the Library and TApe tools diagnostic downloadable from here. Disable RSM in services before running the tool. Looks to me like a permissions issue.

Re: Windows 2003 Backup Error

Might be worth checking the cable. We have had unreliable and odd things happening that were fixed by insisting on a cable and terminator that matches the maximum ability of the controller (card) - even if the tape drives themselves don't need that full cabability.

EG, new systems with Ultra320 controllers will need a braided cable (ie not flat) and LVD stamped on the terminator.

Cheers,

Jim Kelly.

Re: Windows 2003 Backup Error

How can 3 cables on 3 different servers ALL be with problems all at once ?

When I look at the devices in Windows Computer Management there is no error!
When I reboot the servers there is no hardware error !

The reason for bringing this issue to this forum is that the tape units are all different! The servers are of different models !

Re: Windows 2003 Backup Error

you just have to install a patch newly released by Microsoft: kb817688. Open a free call to Microsoft to obtain it. (needs reboot)
