When the HPE StoreOnce used capacity is almost full, below are the options to free-up the space:
1. Check with the application owners and identify if there is any data that qualifies for deletion. Example,
- Catalyst stores, VTLs, NAS shares or replications which are no more required.
- Catalyst stores, VTLs, NAS shares or replications which are created for test purpose but not required anymore.
- Additional or redundant copies of catalyst stores, VTLs, NAS shares or replications which are not very important.
- Any backups, virtual tapes or cartridges which are no more required.
2. Although the option is available to delete a backup from the catalyst store or a cartridge from VTL, the recommendation is to delete them from the backup software. If you delete an item like a backup or a cartridge from the HPE StoreOnce system, the backup software will not be aware about the items that were deleted. So, the backup software will not be in sync with the Realtime data.
3. When you delete an entire Catalyst Store, VTL or NAS share, the space will be reclaimed immediately.
4. If you delete items within a store, VTL or NAS share, the space will be reclaimed after the housekeeping process, depending on the deduplication ratio. For example, in a catalyst store with a 10:1 deduplication ratio, on an average, deleting 100GB of user data will only clean up 10GB of physical space.
5. You cannot manually start the housekeeping task in HPE Gen4 StoreOnce systems. It is a low priority system task, which will start when the system resources are available. So, the best practice is to allow housekeeping to run at least once a week, by avoiding continuous scheduled backup and copy jobs.
NOTE: The best practice is to combine a common type of data in a common VT library, NAS shares or Catalyst Store. That helps you to improve deduplication ratio and efficient utilization of the physical space.
If deleting any data is not an option, please contact HPE support to add more drives and increase the physical storage capacity of the system.

Re: What to do when HPE StoreOnce used capacity is almost full
@sbhat09 Thank you for the usuful informaiton.
Could you please confirm that we can delete the old data using the Data Protector? or we can change the Tape and check it for the data flow on backup?

SolutionThe old data may be deleted from Data Protecter (by setting the backup to expiry or deleting the backup).
