got my network going finally :-)

Thanks to those who replied to me. I do indeed have a firewall on both computers, since someone asked about that. The trick in the end is what was described in the replies. I made a new user acct on the xp machine and gave it a password. On the 98se machine when I was asked for the password in order to access my xp machine, I put in the newly created password for the user acct. Then it worked! I thank those who took the time to reply to me.
