I want to set up VLANs over HP5406zl Core switch and HP3500yl switches

I want to set up VLANs over HP5406zl Core switch and HP3500yl switches

I have got a network where core switch Hp 5406zl and there are 15 more switches Hp 3500yl, I want to seperate my servers from the users and also Vlans for more security.

How can I create VLANS on A Class IP Addressing. PLease guide me step by step configurations on Core Switch and other switches. Why do we tag and untag? please

we are already using Cisco Call Manager MCS 7800E Series
Do I need to do anything regarding VOICE or not.

Hi Malix

Check the management and configuration guides, they have pretty good step-by-step instructions - and once you know how to do it with one ProCurve, you can do it with any, the interface and commands are the same. Different VLANs need to be on different subnets regardless of what class your address space is.

If a link is carrying traffic for only one VLAN (say it's a workstation port) you leave the port untagged in that VLAN. If you need the link to carry traffic from multiple VLANs (inter-switch link) you can leave it untagged on one VLAN, but it must be tagged on others.

To enable the traffic to be handled correctly create a VOICE VLAN where you put the phones, and use QoS to prioritize the traffic.

thechnically you can create vlans on all ip adress classes.
by the way each vlan can carry the same whole class-a adreses range.
You can use same adresses on all vlans at the same time as long as there is no routing between the vlan's (they do not need to communicate with one another).
But this is probably not what you want.

= first you need to look at your current addrsses in use.
= see if you can logically group adresses,
-- geographically
-- device type (servers, workstation, printers etc)
-- or other logic grouping (department)

you can use an existing grouping, or a totally new design.

= then you need to split your class-A network in smaller subnets.
-- create vlans for each subnet
-- configure switch-interconnect ports tagged to carry (all) vlan's
-- configure routing between subnets
-- configure host-ports untagged for a vlan
-- connect host to the new port in the respective vlan/subnet
-- and configure the (new) ip-adress and subnetmask on those hosts
