miniGBIC Differences? J4859A/J4859B

What's the difference between the following two miniGBIC's? HP PArt Number

J4859A
J4859B

The B versions are newer ones which have an anti-counterfeiting algorithm included.

The newer switches will only work with these B versions.

are you implying by this that if we use a J4859A (legitimate) in a new 2600B series switch it will not function, and the stock of 30 gbics we have is now useless to us?

The 2600 is okay. It is only the 3500, 4200, 5400 and 8100 that require B version mini-GBICs.

I have reports on same problem with 2800 series also.

I have definately had problems with the older ones in a 2600 switch. Log comes up saying 'non-procurve interface detected' or something similar.

Am looking to get replacements sent through as we bought the interfaces as part of a massive bundle of equipment from HP and with the firmware updates they no longer work!

our hp 4108gl switch had the J4858A gbics, i have just added 4 J4858Bs and they are fully functioning

You got that backwards. The problem is the anti-countefeiting measures on some switches disable the "A", not "B" GBICs.
