PCM Notification speed

How quickly can PCM discover a device no longer responding on the network? Is it possible to use it in the same way as Castlerock SNMPc for immediate notifications? SNMPc will realise a device is unresponsive within 10-20 seconds. So far my experience with PCM is that it takes much longer. I've set ping sweeps lower but now get event messages telling me the time intervals are to short.
