Boot problem on HP Visualize C160L - OS 10.x
I have a VERY old HP Visualize C160L - HPUX 10.x
After a electrical failure, this system doesn't re-boot on Primary Boot.
Message is "/stand/vmunix not found"
1) I used ISL> SEArch, there is no other bootable device
2) There is no CD-ROM drive
3) There is a DDS Tape drive, but I didn't find any DDS Bootable tape
4) I tried >ISL Hpux /stand/vmunix.prec -> unsuccessfull
Is there a possibility to get a DDS bootable tape somewhere ?
How should I proceed to access and recover the system ?
Thanks

Re: Boot problem on HP Visualize C160L - OS 10.x
I'm hoping that's what you actually typed because, if so, switching it to say "vmunix.prev" (with a vee, not a cee) might mix your problem.
Otherwise, it's time to look for the Ignite tape that you made of this system. You *DO* have one, don't you?

Re: Boot problem on HP Visualize C160L - OS 10.x
Sorry, was a mistake in the message,
I tried ISL>hpux /stand/vmunix.prev
This system is there for years and nobody took care because was supposed to stop.
Unfortunately, I did find any DDS bootable tape, Ingnite tape or ..

Re: Boot problem on HP Visualize C160L - OS 10.x
Chances are that the disk has not been able to spin back up following the electrical brownout. Plug your ear on it, if it's not humming, it's dead. You can try unplugging it, shaking it, and turning back on the workstation, just to see if it helps, but that's long shot.
If you have another similar workstation with a DDS tape drive, you can replace the bad disk then clone the good workstation using make_tape_recovery.
In all other cases, if the data on the disk is important, it's probably recoverable but you'll have to hand it out to a specialized firm, one that can read HFS volumes. HP can probably help you finding someone who can do this. I have vague memories of cracking open a dead IDE drive a long time ago to help it respin one last time, and I was able to recover what was on it. But that's a stunt I wouldn't try with production data.
Bonne chance

Re: Boot problem on HP Visualize C160L - OS 10.x
I assume you speak French ;-)
but if someone else follow the subject...
Thank a lot for these informations / diagnostic.
At this moment, from my side, I tried some checks in ISL, DDS tapes,...
To go further, our IT managers asked me not to go on by myself, but ask me to find an external supplier. This morning, I found a company in Toulouse, and I'm waiting for a proposal regarding a HP-UX 10.x specialist's intervention.
Your informations will be very useful to follow the subject and try to recover system and datas..
Encore une fois merci.
Bonne journée
Marie-Noelle
