Check this out:

http://www.redhat.com/software/rhel/kernel26/

I wouldn't even consider using AS 2.1 today. Go RHEL 3. It doesn't make any diference in regards to what you are paying. The Red Hat subscriptions go by ES, AS, etc., not by the 2.1 or 3.

The right question to ask is what are the diferences between the Linux 2.6 kernel and the "The Enterprise Kernel" included in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3

To provide the best mix of technology and stability, Red Hat created the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 products using a hybrid kernel approach: features from the Linux 2.6 kernel that would be of most value to commercial/enterprise customers and ISVs were backported for use with the latest and most stable Linux 2.4 kernel. As a result of this approach Red Hat Enterprise Linux products are provided with kernels that are based on the highly stable 2.4.21 kernel, but also deliver many of the performance and scalability features of the 2.6 kernel.

Red Hat As 2.1 is obsolete.

Red HAt AS 3.0 has released its terminal version and AS 4.0 is in beta.

AS 2.1 is based on RH 7.3

AS 3.0 is based on RH 9.0

Re: Difference between the kernel of redhat linux AS 2.1 and 3.0

the kernel of 2.1 is based on the first versions of linux 2.4, even before the new VM was put in place. RH stayed with the original VM for a while, refining it and making it a bit more stable.

in 3.0 you will also find a 2.4 kernel, except that it contains important parts of 2.6 which were backported to 2.4 by redhat (but the kernel in 3.0 is by no means comparable with 2.6!)

this translates mostly in a better scalable kernel in 3.0, it also includes LVM by default and a lot of userspace improvements.
