ignite in a nutshell

Without having me read the whole ignite manual, can someone tell me whether I can create a bootable CD/DVD that has the necessary OS on it to recover my server without setting up a separate ignite server? Or, is the ignite server the recommended means for backup and recovery of a server should something fail.

I just started working with six HP-UX servers.
Two L-class servers running 11.0, one rp3440 running 11 V1, and three other rp3440 servers running 11V2. I'm really concerned about being able to recover after a hardware failure because I do not see any backups (other than data) being done. Right now it looks like I will be re-installing the OS is something should go wrong. Yikes!

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Re: ignite in a nutshell

Any advice for the older servers? Sounds like the instructions are mainly for the rp3440s. The two older servers have tape drives so I guess I'll need to stick to the traditional route - make_tape_recovery. Or, can I not do that because I do not have an Ignite server?

Maybe I'm confused about terminology. Is the 'Ignite server' any server with Ignite installed? Or is a dedicated box on it's own?

Re: ignite in a nutshell

You can setup a server as in Ignite-UX server. You can then use the make_net_recovery command to put ignite images on the ignite server. Ignite can be used for more than DR scenarios. It can also be used to make workstation images for depts (i.e. engineering, accounting, etc). You do not need an Ignite-UX server setup to do a make_tape_recovery. Put a tape in the drive and run the following:

make_tape_recovery -I -x inc_entire=vg00

You may have to add a -a if your tape is not at /dev/rmt/0mn. This should make a complete backup of your system minus any data in any other volume groups. which usually your OS related files, etc are in vg00.

I would really suggest the Ignite class if you are interested in learning more.

Re: ignite in a nutshell

Thanks for the explanations! I'd love to take a class, but it would probably be through RAIL. Being out here in Maui makes classes a little difficult to take. Travel costs are high. Also, because of the time difference, a lot of the RAIL classes I've been interested in start at 6am or earlier! Forums have been the best means of gaining information.
