ignite recovery

I am testing an rx5670 Itanium configuration. I have successfully made a make_net_recovery to a PA ignite server. I have looked thru the Ignite admin guide (ver 17) and I am very confused to the procedure used for an ignite recovery. What I am trying to do is to do an actual recovery on the Itanium to see the actual procedure while in a test phase rather than learning under fire. Questions:

in the bootptab on PA (ignite server): should bf point to the boot_lif. I have set up the remaining parameters with the Itanium attributes.

do I initiate the recovery from the IPF client thru the EFI while booting up? Can I initiate it via the server? I presume I would select the 'recovery' option on the ignite menu?

When I do a bootquery from the Itanium (client), where will the answer to the boot query come from, the client or the server?

thanks....Jay

Re: ignite recovery

Ignite recovery:

Boot the rx box

interupt at the 10 second prompt.

bo lan.ipaddress_of_ignite_server install

ex

bo lan.192.168.0.50 install

This boot MUST be on the built in NIC card of both servers. We set up a private network for Ignite transfers.

The actual image transfer can be on any network or card, but the boot MUST be on the internal card.

If you have set up a proper client configutation on the server you should be able to boot the client.

You do need to make sure the Core OS CD for the rx box is swcopy 'd on the Ignite server.

Let me know if you need more information.

Re: ignite recovery

Thanks Steve....I did not realize that the 11.23 CD needed to be swcopy(d) to the ignite server. Would you happen to know the approximate size this would be?

Also, does it matter which directory I copy it to? Can I make a directory and copy it to there ?

Re: ignite recovery

I don't have an exact figure on the size involved.

that depends on the version you are using. I have a combined PA-RISC/Itanium DVD.

I'd estimate we're looking at between 1 and 3 GB for ethe core OS.

Here are some documents on Ignite Golden Images. The Core OS is required for golden image. I not actually sure its required for make_net_recovery. Because my Ignite servers are used for Golden images and make_net_recovery, I always include the Core OS.

Re: ignite recovery

You don't need the coreOS CD copies to the Ignite server if you are booting from a make_net_recovery archive.

That would kinda defeat the purpose.

Re: ignite recovery

One more question (I hope)....in the bootptab on the ignite server, what should I use for the 'bf' entry...should I leave the default or point to a file that was created when I ran make_net_recovery, if so what file would that be?

Re: ignite recovery

For itanium clients, in the bootptab of the IUX server the bf points to /opt/ignite/boot/nbp.efi.

Depending on the state of the client, the recovery can be done either through the server or the client.

For IA boxes, there is not "bo lan." option. From the IA client, when the efi boot manager comes up you can either create your own boot option through the boot option maintenance menu then add a boot option. Or, you can recover the client through the following:

Interrupt the EFI Boot Maintenance Manager
select boot option maintenace menu
select boot from a file
select a load file that matches your mac_address

Re: ignite recovery

Question for SEP:

You stated that "This boot MUST be on the built in NIC card of both servers"

Are you sure about this? Is this only applicable to Itanium servers? I question this as I am certain that you can configure which LAN card is used for the net_recovery install. I remember doing this a few years back but now after reading your comments, I'm not so sure.

Re: ignite recovery

Okay....we did the recovery.....here are some interesting observations:

1. We did need to 11.23 core files
2. After the recovery was completed, I lost part of the root mirror configuration, specifically the partition where the boot is setup:

ie. when a lvlnboot -v command is done, it does not reflect the mirror in the 4 different sections...

when doing a setboot command, there is only 1 boot disk listed

any suggestions?????

Re: ignite recovery

Perhaps it is different with Itanium architecture, but it has always been my understanding that Ignite does not recover any mirroring configuration. It merely recovers your root volume and you have to rebuild your mirrors and other VGs.
