Max No. Of IP Alias in HP-UX / Linux

Anybody knows what is the maximum no.of ip aliases i can add in a hp-ux or linux system.?

I believe both are controlled by network limitations.

You will probably run out of IP addresses on a class C subnet before you run into OS limitations.

I have a Linux router I built that has IP addresses from three networks on one NIC.

I know of no limitations, though performance problems can result if you are not careful and are doing things like routing.

If you are talking about maximum number of IP aliases/logical ip addresses per lan interface, then on HPUX the limit is 2047.

I am not sure about linux.

System is HP-UX 11.11 ,i tried an interface name as lan0:100000 , and it worked ... so where this 2047 came from , or is it for any older version ?

Hi,

On Linux the Alias-Name for a interface is only for human convenience.

So can name your eth0:0 even eth0:foo or eth0:null and you may give it no "name" at all. But then ifconfig will not list your aliases.



On HP-UX you have to name your interfaces according to ifconfig(1M) section "Interface Naming" like [lan|snap][ppa][:num]

But the number of aliases is independent of the :num numbers you use.

So ... As per ur answers i am concluding that i can have any number of ipaliases ...
