Server Hangs after 17-22 users login

Dear Friends,

Output of uname -a command.
HP-UX ANAND B.10.20 E 9600/803 2007679199 8-user license.

In that above mentioned server I could able to connect upto 15(approximately, some time 20 also no problem) users with out any problem. After that if I try to connect server it takes enough time to connect and some time(after 20-25 users)it comes out with directly. Also my server is having license for 31 users and output of uname -a command shows only 8-users.

In my company we are using clients loaded Windows-xp with SP2 and E-Term software is used in that for connection.

I am new to HP-UX.So,I am thankful to you if you can help in brief.

Regards

Re: Server Hangs after 17-22 users login

since you are running an old OS version like 10.20, I am wondering what type of machine you are running it on and how much physical memory you have. As you know machines have finite resources and every connecting user steals away from these resources and everytime they run a program, it steals more. And you may be simply running out of available resources.

please provide the output of these commands for further help

model
dmesg | grep -i physical #(or if you know the amount of memory you have)
tail -500 /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log # this is better if you can aattach it as it will be long and it needs to be run right after the failed/hung login attempts

Re: Server Hangs after 17-22 users login

Hi Murugan,

it sounds like a reached limit in the kernel parameter.
Check by

sam ---> kernel configuration ---> configurable parameters

maxusers
npty
nstrtel
nfile
nproc

Some of them should be tied by a formula.
Maybe your system is reaching one of them.
For example whent 15 users are connected check by

sar -v 10 10

and note file-sz for nfile and proc-sz for nproc. Are they on the limit?

HTH.

Best regards,
Fabio

Re: Server Hangs after 17-22 users login

if what I am suspecting is right, you have a very weak system. D-class machines are very old. And if you have upgraded or modified the application(s) running on it, or added a few more users, or even if one or more ofyour users learned how to use multiple terminal windows, you may be taxing the server too much.

Without seeing the actual error message when it kicks your request straight out, it is hard to tell the reason but I have a feeling that, it is something like "can not create a fork: insufficient resources", which means that, you may have a kernel parameter problem. You may need to bump up the "nproc" parameter along with few others. Please try to provide the error message you are getting when you are unable to connect, for better responses.

Re: Server Hangs after 17-22 users login

Hi

You are runing a older version of the OS(10.20) I think you need to bump up the kernel parameter few of them are maxusers, npty like you already know the kernel parameter change requires a reboot once after that you should be better.
