Relentless automation: A must for 5G networks

The RAN (Radio Access Network) represents 70% of the operational and capital cost of a mobile network, and as such presents one of the most challenging targets for virtualization, along with biggest return on investment if disaggregation is implemented well.
Telco cloud disaggregation that started in core networks is now extending to the RAN, and operators are announcing commercial deployments of both with virtualized RAN (vRAN), and a few moving further along on the journey to a fully multivendor Open RAN.
This demonstration highlights how HPE RAN Automation provides comprehensive infrastructure management and automation capabilities from a central platform to provision, upgrade, and monitor RAN edge devices such as the showcased HPE ProLiant DL110 Gen10 Plus Telco server, the industry’s first Open RAN workload-optimized server. Enterprise networking use cases are expanding at an historic rate. Hybrid work, edge computing, the explosion of connected devices, and the constant threat of security breaches have made keeping the network’s hardware and software capabilities up-to-date an almost herculean task.
Further complicating matters are smaller IT budgets and shorter network planning cycles, driven by the impact of COVID-19. Large capital expenditures for IT and multi-year network plans are now viewed as too risky by many organizations, making it more challenging for network teams to fund and execute their strategic projects.
At the same time, the speed of business continues to accelerate. Organizations must be agile in order to be competitive and having a network that can consistently enable key business outcomes is critical. Network-as-a-Service, or NaaS, provides the necessary flexibility and agility customers need in a post-Covid world. In fact, research from IDC indicates that 35% of organizations will deploy NaaS within the next two years.

Sustainability, obviously, is a hot topic.
One-third of telcos have made public net-zero commitments according to GSMA, and both HPE and Intel are committed to doing the same. Efficient power optimization of IT infrastructure supports sustainability and reduces the single, largest line item of operational expenses (which for a telco can be 70% of their network operational costs). This demo will show how real-world network traffic patterns and workload requirements can be analyzed with AI/ML to forecast future CPU workload demands, allowing the system to optimize CPU clock speed to align with the needs of the 5G network function (in this case a 5G UPF – User Plane Function).

Here you’ll learn how a global luxury car manufacturer is in the process of implementing a private 5G network to process the huge volumes of real-time data generated from their production line, optimize operations and improve worker productivity.
Together with Infosys, we have developed a private 5G network layer comprising HPE 5G Core Stack running on the HPE Edgeline EL8000 Converged Edge System, and Aruba infrastructure as platform for Edge applications such as AR/VR-enhanced worker solutions, Connected machines and robotics, Automated Guided Vehicles, and Digital Twin.
The solution can be deployed as a standalone private 5G core on a single chassis, or as a shared deployment leveraging common resources for deployment across several sites or customers.
