Bill, I'm pretty much a newbie at UNIX, Could you explain what you mean by "Blank the disk from support media memory based filesystems" Is it possible to run everything in memory so as to not tie up the disk?

Yes, wer'e talking spook stuff here. The security regulations at the air force base here (Vandenberg) require a series of 1's and 0's be written to the disk 6 times with a final pass of alternating 1's and zero's in order to remove all possibilities of classified data. The only other alternative is to physically destroy the disk(s), which my managers tell me they want to avoid doing if at all possible.

I wrote an Xwindow program that uses the UNIX command "dd if=file of=/dev/rdsk/c0txd0 bs=1024k", where x=1 for the system disk, x=2 for the archive disk, and "file" contains all 1's, all 0's, or alternating 1's and 0's (depending on the pass the program is on) The program does 7 passes, writing all 1's, then all zeros, and repeating this 2 more times, with a final pass of alternating 1's and 0's. Each pass consists of 4096 calls to the dd command, since we are using 4Gb disks. This works fine on the archive disk, but when I try and run it on itself (the system disk) it appears to be working ok but when I do a "xd" on the disk it appears that there is still alot of garbage still on the disk. I would greatly appreciate it if anybody could tell me what is going on and what, if anything can be done to fix this problem, or if there are better ways to do what I'm trying to accomplish. Greg

Thanks for the info. what I did was do the dd on the master disk, then boot off a new master disk with the old master disk in the secondary drive, then did the xd on the secondary drive (cot2d0) Could something have been written to the secondary drive during the boot process? Greg

I'm using a program that uses dd to wipe disks with 1's and 0's, and it works on the secondary drive, but not on the primary (master) drive. Is there a reason for this? Greg

I tried ping with different block sizes and when block sizes got over 900 bytes messages started to get dropped. Does anyone know what is going on?

For no explanable reason, we cannot upload to our hp9000 any file > 1k bytes using ftp (we use to be able to) All other features of ftp are working ok I can download files of any size from the hp, I can cd, ls, pwd etc. I can ftp to itself using the localhost hostname any file size. When I turn debug on using "ftp -d" on the remote machine and do a "put" I get: put gregjunk ---> TYPE 1 200 Type set to I ---> PORT 192,168,20,32,4,128 200 PORT command sucessful ---> STOR gregjunk 150 Opening BINARAY mode data connection for gregjunk at this point ftp just sits there and does nothing. I can't do an rcp on the remote machine because it doesn't have a hosts.equiv file and the machine is not mine to mess with. Both hosts are on a common lan segment and share the same subnet address without a router in between them. Rebooting did not fix anything, nor did using a different account. I don't really quite know what I'm doing and would appreciate any insight. Thanks, Greg

Melvyn, Thanks for your response, to answer your questions: we can download from out hp ok, I haven't done a rcp yet, but I will try that, and, (from our network guy): Our network is a standard Ethernet, TCP/IP network. The network interface cards (on the PC and HP), I assume, are both talking at 10 MBPS using standard TCP/IP open protocols. Both hosts are on a common LAN segment and share the same subnet address (192.168.20.0) without a router in between. Greg

for no apparent reason we suddenly cannot upload via ftp to our hp9000 any file > 1k all other features of ftp seem to be working ok. The system crahed due to power glitces a few times. Did something get corrupted? Does anybody have any ideas? Greg

Is there a way to turn off the output of dd, you know, "x+y records in", "x+y records out". I am using dd inside an x-window program that wipes classified disks of their data and those messages look kind of tacky. If I had the dd source code maybe I could modify that and incorporate it into my program, or are there other commands I could use to accomplish the same thing? Thanks, Greg

I tried to "fsck -y /dev/rdsk/c0t2d0" and got an error: "bad superblock, magic # wrong", and disk still goes through file repair on bootup. Help! -Greg

Thanks for the help guys. I tried Madhu's suggestion of doing dd to /dev/null and got 4341+1 records in, 4341+1 records out for the original disk and 4340+1 records in, 4340+1 records out for the new disk. So is there a way to see if anything is missing on the new disk? Greg

From reading other threads i'm able to use the command "dd if=/dev/rdsk/c0t1d0 of=/dev/rdsk/cot2d0 bs=1024k" to make a clone of a 4 GB disk from one drive to another on our machine, but I get the following error when it completes the copy: I/O Error 4341+0 records in 4340+1 records out The new disk boots ok after I get the message "Filesystem not properly shutdown, beginning file system repair" and it goes through the filesystem repair. Once it boots it looks like everything works ok from what little I've tried. Does anybody know what is going on and if there is anything to be concerned about? Thanks, Greg

I can boot up the machine with the old disk and then do a "tar tv" on the recovery tape, and I can see the contents of the tape so the drive appears to be working ok.
