Can't receive faxes Microsoft fax server in windows 2003 server.
I installed Microsoft Fax console in windows 2003 server. I can send faxes correctly but could not receive the faxes. Though I configured for automatic answering after 2 rings, it doesn't work.
But when I dial the fax number for checking, it works when I click the manual receive button. Then, I can hear the fax tone.
Only the automatic answering is not working.
What could be the problem?

Re: Can't receive faxes Microsoft fax server in windows 2003 server.
Make sure the fax service is set to automatic in services.msc. Then, see that an existing directory is configured for incoming faxes. Stop & restart the fax service.
Then, try to figure out what settings ars stored in the modem. Maybe there is a default profile stored where answering or automatic answering is disabled. It's also possible that the RI line is deactivated in the modem or physically broken.
Hope this helps.

Re: Can't receive faxes Microsoft fax server in windows 2003 server.
Thanks for the reply!
As you said the fax service is set to automatic and I tried restarting the fax service.
I am using PCTel HSP56 Micromodem Data/Fax/Voice/Speakerphone/v.80.
The modem settings are:
Port COM4
Speaker volume: on
Maximum Port Speed: 115200
Dial Control Checked Wait for dial tone before dialing
Also find the Diagnostics results of the modem.
But this same modem is working perfectly in Windows XP. I can receive and send faxes in windows XP without any problem.
Where is the default profile stored and what is the RI line which may be deavtivated.

Re: Can't receive faxes Microsoft fax server in windows 2003 server.
Had my own problems with fax services, too.
This is the thread, for reference.
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=944039
You may search for the string ATQ0V1E0 - you will find this in the registry as described in the thread above - and change it to AT&F0Q0V1E0 . &F0 initializes the modem's profile #0.
Probably you won't have a modem setup program, but you may use hypertrm to send commands to the modem instead, while the fax service is not active (it can be stopped & disabled temporarily in services.msc).
Once connected to the modem, send these commands:
+++ {wait 3 seconds now}
ATS? {save the returned default settings for reference}
AT&V {save these, too for reference}
AT\S {the same, more verbose}
ATE0N1Q0S2X1&K6%E1\N3 {this programs most modems to automatically receive faxes with autocompression, autoreliable mode, variable speed mode. If the modem complains about any of these commands, leave that out)
AT&W0 {this command stores the just programmed values in the modem's profile #0}
Now you can close hypertrm & enable & start the fax service again.
Should things get worse, you can reverse all commands by replacing the command's arguments with the original values. Don't forget to save the profile, though. I've written down here what worked for me, maybe it is a good idea to check the modem's manual if all of the above commands are OK with your modem, too.
Hope, this helps.
Helge.

Re: Can't receive faxes Microsoft fax server in windows 2003 server.
probably there is a RI indicator in front of the modem. The status of the RI line (pin 9 on 9-pin connector, pin 22 on 25-pin connector) follows the status of the indicator.
