Global Address List Problem

I am using Outlook 2003 to connect to Exchange Server 2000 running in cached Exchange mode. When I make changes to the Active Directory, the GAL does not reflect those changes. If I uncheck Cached Exchange mode it does reflect the GAL, however Outlook crawls. When I change back to Cached Exchange mode it reflects the old or "offline" GAL. Help! Thanks in advance.

Re: Global Address List Problem

Luke:

Some steps to try to help.

1) At the command prompt, try:

outlook.exe /cleanfreebusy
outlook.exe /cleanrules
outlook.exe /cleanprofile

/cleanprofile - Removes invalid profile keys and recreates default registry keys where applicable.

/cleanrules - Starts Outlook and deletes client- and server-based rules.

/cleanprofile - Removes invalid profile keys and recreates default registry keys where applicable.

(see http://office.microsoft.com/en-au/assistance/HP010031101033.aspx)
for a full list of OL2003 command line switches

2) Still not working? Try running Detect and Repair found in the Help menu of OL2003. More details here from Microsoft:

http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;822238&spid=2522&sid=24

3) Does this affect all clients or just 1 or 2? If it affects all, ensure Exchange is up to date (i.e. latest service packs etc). If so you may need to run an Exchange database recovery:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/2000/support/dbrecovr.mspx

You may want to wait for other posters to place in a few more tips. Recovery can be a long process for a large Exchange database.

Good luck.

Re: Global Address List Problem

Luke,
when you use outlook 2003 cached mode you use Offline address book (OAB)
OABGen runs inside System Attendant (SA) process and builds OAB according to the schedule (I think default in exchange 2000 is one per day). You can change the OAB generation schedule by right-clicking default offline address list and selecting properties (in Exchange system manager).
You can force an immediate OAB generation by right-clicking the default offline address list and selecting the Rebuild option as well.
And probably you have problem with OAB generation- see "How to troubleshoot the OAB Generation process"

Re: Global Address List Problem

Luke:

Hmmm, very strange indeed. Still some ideas to check.

1) In Outlook, go to Tools->E-mail Accounts->View or change existing e-mail accounts

2) Click on Microsoft Exchange Server and click on Remove.

3) Click Finish then go back into the same Window to add an e-mail account.

4) Add in your Exchange server but be sure to use it's full name. For example, if you have a DNS entry that has FOONET point to ExchangeServer01.d.r.mycompany.com, don't use FOONET for the location of the server. Use ExchangeServer01.d.r.mycompany.com. Try pinging this from the PC in question to ensure it works.

5) For the time being, unclick Use Cached Exchange Mode

Also try:

http://www.amset.info/exchange/oab-error.asp

Don't forget to check the Exchange server using OWA to see if you've got a client or server issue. OWA is live data and should be working fine.

If none of this works, could you tell me a little about your network? Are your domain controller and Exchange server on the same machine? If they are two machines, are they on the same network, VPN, behind a firewall? How many machines make up your Active Directory (AD) Forest?

If you have multiple machines, check your AD replication. On the Win 2003 resource disk, its called Checkrepl.vbs. For Win2k, you can find this in Active Directory Sites and Services in the Start menu under Administrative Tools. Briefly covered here:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=320824&SD=tech

Good luck.

Re: Global Address List Problem

Have you tried asking the moderator? The forums seems to be quite permissive but there may be limits.

Good luck.
