Intermittent Shutdown of hp pavilion a867c

I have had intermittent shutdowns of my hp pavilion a867c running on Windows XP Version 2002, Service Pack 2. It will sometimes operate for a day or so, then suddenly shutdown with an audible click, with the PC's power on light and fan remaining on.
I have reloaded the operating system with my restore CDs with no success. Any ideas?

It could be due to:

Increased Temperature or any blockages at fan outlet slots. I faced it many times while using my laptop on bed.
You may want to check if there is any event caught in Event Log.
May be a Virus.. do you get something like 30 seconds warning..(sasser)

hai,

paul after once u plcaed the problem, power off and try to power on the system immediately, if u cant there may be problem with the temperature or with smps.

it is purely a h/w issue.
