Slow Backups on HP Ultrium 3 Tape Drive

Hi,

I have recently installed a Tape drive(HP Ultrium 3) into a server. The server is runnign SBS 2003 R2 SP1. I am using a Acer Altos G330 MK2 server. This drive is connected locally and needs to backup only the data locally on the server. 87GB takes around 5 hours to Backup Using Data Express(Hotfix3)(Same speed I had with the removable HDD)

On the DC on that site, I am running the same setup, but gets nearly 300GB data backed up in around 3 hours...

Can someone please assist. This would be much appreciated!

Re: Slow Backups on HP Ultrium 3 Tape Drive

which server r u talking about. IS it HP-UX or windows. I guess u r talking about Windows 2003 OS.

check for connactivity
network load.
raw data backup takes less time

Re: Slow Backups on HP Ultrium 3 Tape Drive

Thanks for your quick response, I am running Windows SBS 2003 R2 with SP1. The DC Runs Windows 2003 SP1. I am using a SAS controller card on PCI express. You talk about RAW DATA Backup, how do configure it?

Re: Slow Backups on HP Ultrium 3 Tape Drive

according to Seagate, those drives can sustain 78MB/s. Barring bottlenecks, that should get you somewhere around ~270GB/hr.

If you look at the data being backed-up, is it many relatively small files? If so, that can be a problem to back up.

Are you using VSS?

The raw backup referred to earlier is a volume backup. You would have to split the mirror and backup the split-off volume. They won't run if there is a file locked anywhere on the volume. Don't know if you can support such w/ the hardware you've got....

Also, you can't restore a single file from a volume backup, you have to restore everything......

Re: Slow Backups on HP Ultrium 3 Tape Drive

Hi,

I ran some Tests with LTT and the results were:
Performance was 45% of Maximum at 55MB/s
All other tests were passed.

Once again, using Data Protector Express 3.5 SP2 it took around 6 Hours to backup 90GB of data.

I am not to clued up on backups as I am quite new to this.

Thanks for all your responses, much appreciated!

Have you ever found the cause and solution to your problem? I am having a similar issue on Solaris 10.
