Slow directory listing on specific share

All,

Is anyone familiar with the following problem:
On the same windows 2003 server we host the PROFILES share and the HOMES share of our 800+ Windows XP SP2 clients.
If we open the PROFILES directory on the server or client it presents the list with directories fast and with no problems.
If we open the HOMES directory it takes a while before the list of directories is presented.
Both directories are on the same SAN disk, same partition, same server.
What can be the cause of the slow homes directory listing ?
