Windows Server 2003 and FCA2214 Driver Load Problem

I have a Proliant DL320 with FCA2214 fibre card installed. Software is W2003Server and the SmartStart - no patches or other software. I downloaded each of three different versions of the HBA driver - version 8.2.0.73 (cp003973), version 9.0.0.13 (cp004229), and just today version 9.0.2.11 (cp005268). I have tried over the last two days to double click on any one of these executable files to install the FCA driver. After a long time (5-10 minutes or more) when I check on the system, it says the program is not responding. The FCA shows up in the manage devices as there (the QLogic under SCSI), but the virtual disk isn't there. I did this successfully on this system several months ago, also within the last two weeks on another identical system. Has anyone had a problem loading this executable? What is the fix? Thanks!

Hi,

have you tried extracting the files to a temporary location and using Device Manager to update the driver?
What Storage System do you have?

Re: Windows Server 2003 and FCA2214 Driver Load Problem

Stephen, I have tried to extract on each of the three files, but only the cp003973 will allow it. The other two only have "Run" or "Cancel" - no "Extract" option. I have an EVA3000, but I don't think that is part of the issue. To repeat, I have done this very process successfully on three other systems. I also have swapped the hardware (entire box and fiber card) and reloaded the OS twice. I have also tried installing the driver just after installing the OS new, again after the SmartStart, and again after SP1 was installed. When I extracted cp003973 and clicked on the fibre card and updated/installed the driver, it didn't pick up the disk - just the card (under RAID SCSI). What I figure is something has changed with the .exe file I downloaded from the web site. Oh, to test that, I moved the .exe file from another system and it still didn't load. It runs for 5-10 minutes - actually once I left it 30 minutes, then finally when I check the Task Manager, it indicates that program (cp003973) is "not responding". Thanks for any insight you can offer.

Re: Windows Server 2003 and FCA2214 Driver Load Problem

Hi,

another way of updating your driver is by running the setup of the Platform Kit for the EVA3000.
http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/storageworks/softwaredrivers/enterprise/index.html

Here you also have the option to install/update qlogic drivers, which are contained in the download.
Also, are the FC cables connected when you are installing this? If so, can you try with them disconnected?
Can you see a device called HSV100_CCL_LUN (or something similar) under system devices?

Re: Windows Server 2003 and FCA2214 Driver Load Problem

Stephen, I was out of the office last week and could not try your suggestions. Today I downloaded the zip file of the EVA3000 platform kit from the URL you gave me. I tried running it, but when it was installing the qlogic driver (ql2300) after a while the process was "not responding". I waited about 15 minutes. I unplugged the fiber cable, rebooted to the last good configuration, and checked the device manager. The FCA2214 qlogic card showed up with the yellow ? - new hardware. I clicked to install/update the driver and specified the location in the EVA3000 platform kit under setup. It installed the driver fine. There was no other unknown or unconfigured hardware at that point.
I rebooted, then ran a new fibre cable, plugged it to the SAN switch and the PC. In device manager, I ran the scan new hardware and after 5-10 minutes it was still "thinking". In the task manager, it showed that process as "not responding".
I've replaced the DL320 completely, the FCA2214 card, the fibre cable, and reloaded W2003Server three times. I'm at a loss as to what the problem is. One final note, the HSV100_CCL_LUN is indeed what should have shown up, but it never did. Do you have any more ideas? Thanks!

Re: Windows Server 2003 and FCA2214 Driver Load Problem

Jenny,
did you verify that the adapter has connectivity to the EVA? There is a function in the adapters BIOS ("Scan Fibre Devices") and you should see at least one EVA port.

Of course, that does not explain your problems with the adapter drivers :-(
I have set up several servers last week:

- SmartStart V7.10, driver V8.2.0.73 for the EVA management server
- SmartStart V7.20 and driver V9.0.2.11(update) for the remaining 12 servers (DL380G4 + DL580 G2?)

and I didn't have any problems at all.

A minor note: in V9.0.2.11, EVA's LUN 0 is no longer called "CCL" - it will change to something like "... Array Controller Storage Device"
(that's what it has always been called in engineer speak).

Re: Windows Server 2003 and FCA2214 Driver Load Problem

Thanks to the help given here, I think I've fixed the problem. Loading the driver worked when the fibre cable was unplugged, but any efforts I made to proceed after plugging the cable back in failed. I finally decided to unpresent the virtual disk from the SAN and remove and re-add the host if necessary. What I found was that even though I had changed the WWN on the port to match the HBA when I tried a second card, there was one place that the change was not maintained. I may have missed clicking on the "Save Changes" in a place or something. I fixed that on the SAN, plugged up the cable, and could see the rest of the devices. At this point, I have reloaded and tinkered to the point that I'm reloading W2003Server on the DL320 and expect everything to work correctly. Thanks again guys for the help!

Re: Windows Server 2003 and FCA2214 Driver Load Problem

Ah, glad you got it working!

The FCA2214 adapter BIOS has another feature called 'fibre disk utility'. The first screen looks like the "Scan Fibre Devices" I've mentioned. You choose a storage port and then you jump on a new screen from where you can choose a LUN if you have successfully presented at least one virtual disk.

Else, the BIOS responds with a slightly strange message (don't recall right now) which is confusing if you see it for the first time, because the LUN 0 is not a disk device.

Watch out what you do next if you chose a LUN, because you can destroy data that way!

Re: Windows Server 2003 and FCA2214 Driver Load Problem

It appears that the problem may have something to do with the NSRouter (M2402) on the SAN and the fact that it has both an HVD and an LVD module. When I take the NSRouter out of the SANSwitch zone for this DL320, the virtual disk shows up fine and the cp003973 loaded fine. With this submission, I will close this thread and open one in the SAN forum regarding mixing modules on the NSR. Thanks for the help!
