Even though I deleted unused data under the operating system, the LUN in the storage still
Hello,
I moved the archive data from previous years on the Windows server to the NAS file environment. The available capacity has increased on the operating system side, but it still shows 99% on the storage side.
Storage HPE XP8 G1 and fmd disk technology
What can I do about this? Thank you in advance for your support

Re: Even though I deleted unused data under the operating system, the LUN in the storage s
Hi HasanKatman,
The file system may not recognize the free space because the data has been moved but not deleted.
You may be able to troubleshoot and maybe fix this issue by following these procedures and considerations.
If there are any snapshots or backups taking up space on the HPE XP8 G1, delete or consolidate them if they are no longer needed.
Data Reclamation is a feature of HPE XP8 G1, which enables you to reclaim unused space, especially if you are using Thin Provisioning, you may need to perform a manual reclamation if this is not enabled.
A Windows server defragmentation process may be helpful in some cases, although fragmentation is less common with modern file systems.
The HPE XP8 G1 firmware and software must be up to date. Sometimes, bugs in the storage system software can cause issues with space reclamation.
Ensure your storage volumes are configured for Thin Provisioning, if not, consider converting them.
Verify the file system integrity to prevent discrepancies in space reported caused by file system errors.
Analyze the storage system logs and monitoring tools to look for any alerts or warnings that may indicate the reason the space isn't being reclaimed.
Hope this helps.!
Regards,
Satish

Re: Even though I deleted unused data under the operating system, the LUN in the storage s
@Satish04 Hello Satish04,
Thank for answer.
Your comments did not satisfy me. For example, when we delete the LUN from storage, there is no problem. Space is made available on the pool for usable capacity. However, if we do not delete the LUN, the usable capacity on the pool does not change when the operating system only deletes the data in the drive corresponding to the LUN.

Re: Even though I deleted unused data under the operating system, the LUN in the storage s
Hi HasanKatman,
I am not an XP expert. But in general, you might need to use the 'sdelete' in Windows to fill zeros to the empty space so that the storage can reclaim the free space. This is simlar to 'unmap' in esx.

Vivek

Re: Even though I deleted unused data under the operating system, the LUN in the storage s
Thank you Vivek,
I have a quick question. When I run the sdelete test, it first fills the disk to full and then deletes it. Wouldn't this cause an interruption in the prod system?

Yes, running sdelete can potentially cause interruptions in a production system.
