Migrating data from IBM DS4300 to HP XP 24000 with zero downtime!

Dear Everyone,

I am going to migrate data from an IBM DS4300 Storage to HP XP 24000 with zero downtime. My system is running on P Series p570 Servers, IBM AIX 5.3, Oracle RAC 10g R2, Temenos T24 Core Banking. I want to migrate data from this IBM Storage to HP Storage without downtime. Could you show me how to do that?

Thank you very much,

hainvan.

according to me for that you need to configure external storage on XP24000 and thought auto LUN migration you can do this.

Thanks - suresh patoria

I don't know any AIX but I have heard that AIX uses a volume management system similar to LVM in HP-UX. In that case you could make the XP24000 LUNs part of the existing volumes groups and mirror from the DS4300 LUNs to the XP LUNs or use something similar to HP-UX LVM pvmove (move logical extends live from one LUN to another). Of course you nedd to be able to SAN attach the XP to the server live as well so I assume you already have that capability.

That 's one of the virtualization features of the XP, it makes storage on other arrays appear as XP storage. You would still have to cut over your server to use the XP array so that would mean downtime.

Re: Migrating data from IBM DS4300 to HP XP 24000 with zero downtime!

Dear Everyone,

Sorry for my late reply because I have many projects must do last week.

Thanks for your information. But, I need the detail step-by-step guide or brief guide how to do that to success.

I summary this case study below with some of informations are correctly:

1. We have two cluster groups:
- the first cluster group with two nodes IBM p570 servers, running on IBM AIX 5.3, Corebanking Temenos T24, Jbase DB (not Oracle, i├в m sorry because this information is not correct before). These servers are connecting to IBM DS 4800 Storage through IBM SAN Switch (not IBM DS 4300). Each Server has two HBA and already used.

- the second cluster group with two nodes HP DL580G5 servers, running on MS Windows Server 2003, VietNam Corebanking (SmartBank), SQL Server DB. These servers are connecting to HP EVA 4100 Storage through HP SAN Switch. Each Server has two HBA and already used.

2. We will buy new HP XP 24000 Storage for consolidating in next month.
3. We want to:
- Keeping all servers hardware, os, app and cluster information don├в t change.
- Migrating data from IBM DS 4800 and HP EVA 4100 to HP XP 24000 Storage with at least downtime if we can. No need re-structured LUN information after migration.

So, how can we do that? Please tell me more detail about the step we must do, step by step guide is better because we don├в t have enough time to research and testing more.

Thanks and regards,
Hainvan.

I think you are asking a bit too much here. This is a huge undertaking and involves heterogeneous storage and servers. You need to put together a team of admins with expertise in AIX, windows, SAN switches, IBM storage and HP storage plus DB and app experts.

For someone to give you that much detail, one would have to spend several hours analyzing your environment and gather all server and storage details and put together a migration plan. I don't know any AIX and this is not an AIX forum. Maybe somebody will provide you with a high level approach.

Re: Migrating data from IBM DS4300 to HP XP 24000 with zero downtime!

Hi,
the best migration method (IBM DS 4800 ->XP 24000, EVA 4100 -> XP24000) seems to be XP External storage feature -> http://h71028.www7.hp.com/ERC/downloads/4AA0-6162ENW.pdf

the pain is one part of the reality

hi TTr and IBaltay,

Thanks for your information. I know this is big question.

I am trying to research a lot of whitepaper from HP and IBM.

If you have any guide for this question, pls show me.

Thanks and best regards,
nvhai.

Re: Migrating data from IBM DS4300 to HP XP 24000 with zero downtime!

Hi Hai and everyone reading this thread,

I couldn't resist to point out misleading information about External storage. This feature allows you to put the data on a second tier storage (EVA behind XP, or XP behind XP) but it does NOT migrate the data in a way that a host can connect to second tier storage directly. Any of the term "migration" used in External Storage documents is for the data migration within the same virualized storage pool and don't misinterpret it with anything else.

In AIX you can use PV-migrate feature or use mirroring to have a smooth seamless migration. You have only but biggest challenge to manage the storage drivers, please check with IBM and HP whether both drivers can coexist or not?

Windows can only offer you volume migration if any kind of Volume Manager software is installed (such as Veritas Volume manager etc.). Another great tool is IBM-Softek TDMF which incurs the downtime to install/deinstall this software which puts a layer between OS and Storage to manage the volumes. It does great mirroring and it's fast too. TDMF can also pause the replication/mirror and upon resume will only copy the delta changes. You have HP Storage mirroring software available too for this purpose but I prefer TDMF because of it's great features and reliability.

My 2 cents worth.

Re: Migrating data from IBM DS4300 to HP XP 24000 with zero downtime!

This can be achieved by
1. Create the LUNs on the XP24000 and present to the server
2. Exent the VG to include the new disks
3. Mirror the extisting LV's onto the new disks
4. Remove the existing disks from the LV's
5. Remove the existing disks from the VG
6. Remove LUN presentation on the DS4300

Thanks Amardeep and Leon Stevens ,

Your information very useful to me. I am working with HP local representative for these tasks.

Thanks for your information again,

Hello Hai,

What was the result for your migration project? Please share with us & me since I am going through this painful phase as well.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Hai N,

What happened to your project, did you achieve what you were looking for ? If yes, how did you do it ?

Dear Everyone,

My System Engineer team and HP Viet Nam Services Team are deploying for my customer. I did not directly install this system.

Thanks for your support and spend your time for this topic.

I want to close this topic here.

Thanks everyone again,

Re: Migrating data from IBM DS4300 to HP XP 24000 with zero downtime!

Hi A. Hai
Sorry for replying your question late.
As what i know, you are working for STB, arent you???

Just for your concerns:
1,- Keeping all servers hardware, os, app and cluster information don├Г┬в├В ├В t change.
- Migrating data from IBM DS 4800 and HP EVA 4100 to HP XP 24000 Storage with at least downtime if we can. No need re-structured LUN information after migration.
>> Sure, you can do, I am sure that AIX could mirror data on both DS and XP. This option will enable you to migrate data online.
2, the second cluster group with two nodes HP DL580G5 servers, running on MS Windows Server 2003, VietNam Corebanking (SmartBank), SQL Server DB. These servers are connecting to HP EVA 4100 Storage through HP SAN Switch. Each Server has two HBA and already used.

>> Windows can mirror disk with disk (dynamic type only).
Please call me if you are still concerned about migration
