SAN Attached Storage

Hi, I have a N4000 HPUX server SAN connected to a HDS storage through a mcdata.

I created a Lunmap on hds, and a zone so that volume is visible to the HPUX.

Now how do i confirm that volume is visible to HPUX, and now how can i install some file system on that volume.

ie, in solaris world, i used to do a format, and that would show the new volume. what is a HP equivalent for that. I didnt find a format other than /usr/sbin/hpC2400/format and i dont know how to use it, See a newbie to HPUX.

Thanks
Sada

Re: SAN Attached Storage

Sada,
as soon as new LUNs appeared for the system, you need to force system to rescan its devices with 'ioscan -fn'. Look through its output to check if there're new LUNs (tip: new LUNs are usually without device files created). Then ask system to create device files for these LUNs 'insf -e'. Run ioscan again and see if device files were created. Then go to 'sam' and you will be able to see LUNs and create VGs and LVs on them.
Good luck!

Re: SAN Attached Storage

Hi Sada,

the ioscan shows you have 2 fibrechannel interfaces td0 and td1, attached to a switch with the domain 99 (if mcdata works like brocade). you don't see any storage devices, so i suppose you need to look for zoning configuration on the switch. you should also look on you're switch to see if the HDS is properly logged into the switch.
once the HDS system is loged properly into the switch ,and the zoning configuration allows you to see the storage, you should do an ioscan -fn , and afterwards, an insf.
then you should see new devices /dev/dsk/cxtydz , under the 0/8/0 and 0/12/0 hw path( if you defined luns on the HDS, and no lun masking is enabled).
theese devices you can use then for lvm.

Re: SAN Attached Storage

Hey C, Thanks for your response, The controller ports are properly zoned in (I verified this with mcdata element tool) and lunmaps are properly created.

Still I cant see those volumes from teh hpux server. I did ioscan -fn & insf, but in vain, i still cant figure out how to see those volumes. so that i can use those volumes, i did a reboot a bunch of time, i dont knopw whaty i am missing.

Re: SAN Attached Storage

As soon as host does not see anything at all and you've checked zoning then I would propose the following:
- check hp-ux FC driver to be the latest http://software.hp.com , check for latest FC driver patches;
- make sure disk array is tuned to work with hp-ux hosts. For example, in XP disk arrays host mode should be set to 08. Please look through your disk array's documentation to see which options are available and what steps should be done to configure LUNs for hp-ux OS

Re: SAN Attached Storage

Hi,

fcmsutil /dev/td0 and fcmsutil /dev/td1 what connection you see.there you will get the wwn of the fibrechannel card, and this you should use for the software zoning on the mcdata switch.
you then should check how the hds storage logs into the switch.mcdata as far as i know is only capable of seeing fabric devices, no loop devices, so check if the storage can work fabric attached.
do you have any logs from the mcdata switch?

Re: SAN Attached Storage

when i run the tddiag, it shouws that, My server can see the remote controller port (HDS 9570V).

I still cant see the LUNS,

The driver version is
Driver Version = @(#) libtd.a HP Fibre Channel Tachyon TL/TS/XL2 Driver B.11.00.10 (AR1201) /ux/core/kern/wsio/td_glue.c: Oct 11 2001, 11:54:14

For model=A6795A

I am going to try another Storage IBM Shark.

One more thing, is The documentation for FC Mass Storage Adapter suggests that, I need

A fc 0 8/0 fcT1 CLAIMED INTERFACE HP Fibre Channel Mass Storage Adapter

C lan 0 8/0/5 fcT1_cntl CLAIMED INTERFACE HP Fibre Channel Mass Storage Cntl

F ext_bus 8 0/5/0/0.8.0.45.0 fcparray CLAIMED INTERFACE FCP Array Interface

I do not have the above drivers, Do i need them to access Luns, Is this some thing i should be worried about ?

I do have some of the fc related drivers as listed in my previous posting of ioscan output.

Thanks All for your help.

Re: SAN Attached Storage

I tested this with IBM shark. and I found some better looking results. Could some one please help me understand these results here from ioscan output. my $million question is can my HPUX server see LUNS on IBM? I cant tell, could some one else tell? if not what is it seeing.
BTW, where do i get drivers for
A5158A & A6795A. I have B.11.00.10 (AR1201) driver on both, is this latest enough.. (sorry i had to ask this as i could locate the drivers in this huge mammoth site.)

Here is the Out put, could some one please tell me what the heck my HPUX server is seeing.

Re: SAN Attached Storage

Hi Sada

As per your talk have 11.0 ,

By default A6795A drivers will not come , you have to load from Latest CD's ( get a help from local HP Team ).

A5158A card will get enabled with B.11.00

http://www.software.hp.com/cgi-bin/swdepot_parser.cgi/cgi/displayProductInfo.pl?productNumber=A6795A

let me know
