Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)

Hey Dan ..
Maybe its me where but the search was down last weekend. It is working now but the search results are weird. I used to be able to do a search and actully bring more archive post on what I was looking for. Now it seems that my searches are only bringing up newer post.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)

Dan,

if I add a hyperlink to a message I have to hit the spacebar after inserting the link otherwise the link will be longer than I want to (see also http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,11866,0xfcf5660142b2d5118ff10090279cd0f9,00.html) <--this one is wrong, correct one is http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,11866,0xfcf5660142b2d5118ff10090279cd0f9,00.html ). On one hand I expect this to work normal (system doesn't know when hyperlink ends), but in front of the link it doesn't matter if I have added a space or not. Is this normal behaviour or could it be changed. Is the system triggered by the entering http???

Another one...Toon Verschoor and Arthur van de Waal are HP-colleagues of you, but they don't get the HP engineer logo in front of their names.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)

sorry, again me, I was just thinking, I don't know an easy way to see all messages I've started.

I assigned points to 17 of 19 messages and I would like to see which messages didn't get points.

I thought there was an easy way to see this, but I couldn't find it. I would like to see a link on the profile page which is similar like the "more" link for replies that a member posted that were rated between 8-10 points

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)

Dan, I *may* have already reported this....

1. Change ownership of ITRC system handle
2. When you go to share access you are NOT the owner, it requires that you log out and log back in for it to recognize you as the owner.
3. You may then share access with others

Can this site run on a faster machine?

It is extremely slow to load!

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)

Hi Dan:

OK, me, the pest again:

It seems that the Forum Search now returns links in the "new" format [thanks].

BUT: It seems that the Forum Search is quite a few bricks short of a load. I did a simple test search for 'fbackup' [a very, hot topic] and got back a grand total of fourteen (14) results. I'd expect the currrent maximum of fifty (50). Interestingly, of the fourteen entries, one went as far back as May 24; another was from August 6; and the remainder were September 21 - October 3.

Something is not right.

Regards!

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)

Hello Dan,

the "search" is delivering the 5-digit links, now, but the
replies inside the threads are not (yet?) converted, as
I just noticed here:
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,11866,0x088cabe92dabd5118ff10090279cd0f9,00.html

In there are at least to references to the old-style "1150"
URLs...

Would it be acceptable for the other forumers to just a
"conversion-table" shown or linked on the forums page
showing something like:
...in case of 404 substitute the four-digit codes from the
first column with the 5-digit code in the second column:

old new
1150 11866
.
.
.

at least until everything IS converted?
BTW, is that kind of conversion "Yet Another Enhancement Request", or is it already scheduled?

The "search" is still delivering only up to 50 results,
but as I am used to "sort" for "posting date", I seem
to be getting the ones I am looking for...

Wodisch

Hi Dan,

ITRC has been working very good for last 5 days. I had no error messages, and response time was very short in comparison with the past.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)

Hi Dan:

As I already noted to you elsewhere, the links referenced by many of us *within* threads have not yet (?) been converted from '1150' to '11866'.

These need to be programmatically corrected, *but* let's not let the update of the thread change its 'last-post-date' lest the changed threads appear as current ones! This actually happened to a small extent about 6-9 months ago when the Networking category was moved from what is now Management Software family to the HP-UX family.

Your comments would be welcome.

Thanks!

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)

Hello again, Dan!

In the thread below Jasper posted a reference to
another page, but his URL has been converted badly...
It seems to me like you have to add a space to the end
of URLs in replies, or else the everything up to a space
is included as URL...

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,11866,0xfcf5660142b2d5118ff10090279cd0f9,00.html

Oh, could it be, that there is NO 1:1 relation of "old" and
"new" codes within the URLs? Like 1150<->11866?

And to say something positive: the forums are quite fast
today!

Wodisch

Dan,

How about starting a forum for those ppl looking for or posting jobs. I've seen a couple of request for HP admins on the main list already. Just a thought.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)

Dan,

I was the author of the recent post "Wouldn't it be neat to own a monkey". I never realized the tidal wave of people looking to wade into such a thorny issue as this one. :)

Was wondering if there is a way to be able to assign points to all responses at the same time, rather than one by one. Perhaps when the author of a question hits an "Assign Points" button, you're shown the entire thread, and each response has the 1-10 pulldown next to it so you can assign points to multiple responses.

Just a thought. I've assigned points to 48 responses so far, and its kind of time consuming. However, its a small sacrifice to get to the bottom of what could be described as the "Holy Grail" of Unix administration queries.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)

Hi Dan:

Hey! How about REMOVING any *user* that posts job solicitation or advertising!!! I, for one, don't want to see this site degenerate into that kind of exchange. IMHO there are appropriate places designed for those things and that's where they should stay.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)

Hello Everyone,

I want to update you on the recent change to the format of URLs found inside the ITRC Forums.

Recently, the ITRC Forums database was reindexed to improve overall performance. The performance measure reorganized the index data into a more performance-minded traversal path. Consequently, the index numbers/locations of URLs in the database changed when the indexes were rebuilt.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you when trying to access URLs that either you have bookmarked or find embedded inside of forums messages. A workaround is described below for the three most often bookmarked or embedded page types --> forums home page, forum families, and message threads.

**Forums Home**
The Forum's home page URL is now:
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/Home/1,,,00.html

**Forum Families**
URLs that point to forum families previously had the following format:
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/FamilyHome/1,1148,117,00.html

If you have a family page URL bookmarked, you will need to remove the reference number "1148" found in the URL, as in the example below of the same URL above:
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/FamilyHome/1,,117,00.html

**Message Post Pages**
URLs that point to pages of message threads previously had the following format:
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,1150,0xcfe4660142b2d5118ff10090279cd0f9,00.html

If you have a thread URL bookmarked, you will need to remove the reference number "1150" found in the URL, as in the example below of the same URL above:
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0xcfe4660142b2d5118ff10090279cd0f9,00.html

I don't have any information regarding converting the embedded URLs that are found inside of messages, as Jim Ferguson has requested. Please standby for more.

Again, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may bring to you, and appreciate your understanding of this matter.

Best Regards,
Dan

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)

Hi Dan,
Two points:
1) Can something be done to reduce the number of pages you must go to when you want to receive notification of a posting? assign points? It can become tedious when the forum is slow.
2) TPP (trivial pet peeve) -
Why is the first level called "Pro" - don't you have to "graduate" before you become a "pro"?

Can you tell that I am getting near 500 points; which by the way is getting more difficult with all the users jumping on questions...but that is a good thing!!

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)

Hello Dan and all you curious people out there!

Answering my own request about statistics - we seem to
have currently:
16753 subscribed users
2425 of them answering questions
2247 being "hatless"
64 Pros
46 Graduates
45 Wizards
21 Royalties

But in spite of being able to collect that from the users
pages, they are so big now, that they are (almost?)
useless:
- it takes too long to load them,
- they are too crowded to be readable
- the loading often stops with "SSI" errors

Can we have the "old school" of user pages back,
please?

Just my ?0.02,
Wodisch

Hi Dan,

I was just playing with my profile. I have chosen for an avatar. Now I would like to get rid of it, but I can't see where???
I only can select another avatar.

Perhaps adding your own avatar could be a good option too...

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)

Hello Dan,

another day - another problem, it seems:
Jasper and I have tried to upload a white paper in PDF
format to the following thread, but id still does not work,
with different symptoms:
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,11866,0x2cea660142b2d5118ff10090279cd0f9,00.html

and the symptoms are:
- the URL did not work at all
- the URL does work, now, but the files are damaged
- even when I posted it after the 4-5 digit conversion, it is still damaged

an old problem of mine is the same as one of the "kings"
reported some weeks ago: a strange link in my list of
"forum solutions" over here:
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/TopSolutions/1,11909,BR8935!2,00.html

the strange thing being that if I manually copy and paste
that text after the forums server's FQDN - it works...

Then I have been "kicked out" after a couple of hours,
again, and had to re-login...

On the bonus side, the hint about omitting the new
5-digit code, DOES work! So why not show this hint
on the main forums-page (or even on top of all of them)
until the problem with the "embedded" links is solved?

Jasper - that is the reason why I did NOT choose one,
I was afraid of not being able to get rid of them ;-)
[and I do not like them for myself]. Which leads me to
this "YAER":
Can we have that picture uploadable by ourselfs, please?
You would have to tell us the restrictions about size,
format, and such, and perhaps you will not some - hmm -
censorship to not have somebody upload *improper*
pictures, but I would like to have that feature. We could
even have our own faces there :-) I do remember the
European UNIX User Group having had a "Face Server"
active back in 1988, or so...
Would that not be something for your new thread(s)
about our royalties' bios?

Kind regards,
Wodisch
