Console Port issues

I'm trying to connect to a rp7410 server through the MP Serial port. The port has the connection with three ends, Console, UPS, and Remote. I have connected a laptop with Windows98 from its serial port to the Console end.

I tried to use Hyperterminal to connect. It shows me, it connected but I get nothing on my screen. When I type I get nothing.

When I try to use telnet, it says cannot get a connection with the server.

I'm sure I have not set something up correctly but do not know where to start looking. Can anyone help?

Re: Console Port issues

Hyperterminal is probably the worst possible tool to use.

But, its what I use in a pinch.

If you use the default settings and match the prior post it will work. You may have to click connect more than one time.

I would not try an OS install using this. Take the time to configure a Linux box with kermit or a real tool to do this job.

You have connected to the correct port btw.

You might find it easier in the long run to get a SWC, Secure Web console. That will let you connect to a website and run your server with a browser.

Re: Console Port issues

Hi,
In Hyper terminal setting use following:

1. Bits persecond-- 9600
2. Data Bits -- 8
3. Parity -- none
4. Stop bits -- 1
5. Flow Control -- none or Hardware

This should work.

Re: Console Port issues

I believe I have the Hyperterminal correct (I double check it against what some of you have sent). I was wondering if I did not set up some of that tty1 stuff correctly.

The laptop hyperterminal I will mainly use for power outages. It with the server is on a APC system. This is something I could use to bring the server down without crashing it during a power outage.

Re: Console Port issues

Hi,
Check whether you are using correct serial cable. This is a normal RS 232 C interface.

Re: Console Port issues

99% of all connectivity issues with serial ports are the two cables. That's correct, there are basically two cables and they are completely incompatible with each other. The common names are 'straight-thru' and 'crossover'. When the serial communication standard EIA RS-232-C was defined, it created the terms DCE and DTE (data communication equipment and data terminal equipment). The basic connection is from a terminal to a modem and that is a straight-thru cable. This cable connects transmit/receive into receive/transmit in the modem. Computers are also terminal equipment, the rp7410 and your PC. A straight-thru cable would be used to go to a modem, but that same cable between the rp7410 and your PC connects transmit to transmit...which will never work.

The crossover cable is also called a null-modem cable or a printer cable. This is the cable you need so that transmit from the HP box goes into receive on your PC. There are also 9-pin and 25-pin crossover adapters that can be inserted that will perform the conversion.
