Console Port issues

I'm trying to connect to a rp7410 server through the MP Serial port. The port has the connection with three ends, Console, UPS, and Remote. I have connected a laptop with Windows98 from its serial port to the Console end.

I tried to use Hyperterminal to connect. It shows me, it connected but I get nothing on my screen. When I type I get nothing.

When I try to use telnet, it says cannot get a connection with the server.

I'm sure I have not set something up correctly but do not know where to start looking. Can anyone help?

check 8bit,noparity,9600 baud is selected in hyper terminal settings.

Also use vt100 or vt220 terminal type

Hyperterminal is probably the worst possible tool to use.

But, its what I use in a pinch.

If you use the default settings and match the prior post it will work. You may have to click connect more than one time.

I would not try an OS install using this. Take the time to configure a Linux box with kermit or a real tool to do this job.

You have connected to the correct port btw.

You might find it easier in the long run to get a SWC, Secure Web console. That will let you connect to a website and run your server with a browser.

Hi,
In Hyper terminal setting use following:

1. Bits persecond-- 9600
2. Data Bits -- 8
3. Parity -- none
4. Stop bits -- 1
5. Flow Control -- none or Hardware

This should work.

I believe I have the Hyperterminal correct (I double check it against what some of you have sent). I was wondering if I did not set up some of that tty1 stuff correctly.

The laptop hyperterminal I will mainly use for power outages. It with the server is on a APC system. This is something I could use to bring the server down without crashing it during a power outage.

Hi,
Check whether you are using correct serial cable. This is a normal RS 232 C interface.

99% of all connectivity issues with serial ports are the two cables. That's correct, there are basically two cables and they are completely incompatible with each other. The common names are 'straight-thru' and 'crossover'. When the serial communication standard EIA RS-232-C was defined, it created the terms DCE and DTE (data communication equipment and data terminal equipment). The basic connection is from a terminal to a modem and that is a straight-thru cable. This cable connects transmit/receive into receive/transmit in the modem. Computers are also terminal equipment, the rp7410 and your PC. A straight-thru cable would be used to go to a modem, but that same cable between the rp7410 and your PC connects transmit to transmit...which will never work.

The crossover cable is also called a null-modem cable or a printer cable. This is the cable you need so that transmit from the HP box goes into receive on your PC. There are also 9-pin and 25-pin crossover adapters that can be inserted that will perform the conversion.
