Cloud Volumes: How Important Is a Multicloud Service?

dgonzalez59

It turns out, very!

It should be no secret that adopting a cloud strategy as a means to improve IT efficiency, streamline application delivery, or reduce overall costs has been an important focus for enterprises these past few years. In fact, a recent survey by 451 Research showed that over 65% of their respondents were considering either moving more than half of their application portfolios to the cloud, or modernizing them for the cloud, in the next 12 to 24 months.

Although most hyperscale  cloud providers have tried to lure all of an enterprise’s cloud footprint with complex service portfolios, the reality is that enterprises are choosing more than one cloud provider in their quest to modernize their infrastructure and applications. Top drivers for this multicloud approach include the freedom to choose providers and avoid lock-in, as well as lower cost, improved performance, and ease of management (see illustration below, by 451 Research).

The same multicloud message was echoed at AWS re:Invent 2018, where a Kentik survey of a pool of attendees at the conference showed that 97% actively used AWS (not surprising given the venue) and over one third (35%) of the pool also used Azure. In addition , almost a quarter of the respondents (24%) used Google Cloud Platform (see illustration below, by Kentik).

The reality in this cloud world is that “multicloud” is not a marketing pitch, but instead a clear consumption model for cloud services!
