MSA 2052 SAS MPIO issues failover cluster Server 2016
Hi,
We're having issues with a new cluster environment setup.
It's a 2-node failover cluster windows server 2016 std.
SAN: HPE MSA2052-SAS, 2 Hostserver: ML350Gen10 HBA:E208e-P
Everything works perfect but as soon as a MSA LUN gets part of the cluster , (Host)servers getting stuck in a restart/shutdown process.
When we add a disk to the cluster using failover cluster manager:
- with MPIO enabled the servers hang on shutdown/reboot untill we remove the disk from the cluster, take it offline or remove the mappings on the SAN.
- without MPIO enabled the servers reboot without any problems. (Of course, for this test we only configured one link to a LUN/server, in production we need multiple links (redundancy)-> also MPIO)
For MPIO settings/policies we followed the HPE MSA2050 best practices, and also tried other options.
We get the same problem everytime MPIO is enabled and a disk is added to the cluster.
We are building Clusters this way (MSAxxxx fiberchannel/SAS) since Windows server 2008R2.
The most recent working combination is with windows server 2016std and a MSA2040 fiber channel and two ML350Gen9. This is the first config where it goes wrong and don’t find a solution. ☹
Maybe it's a Windows or a HP driver bug that's causing this? We've reinstalled the servers several times, but the issue remains the same.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions,

Re: MSA 2052 SAS MPIO issues failover cluster Server 2016
We've also made a topic on the Microsoft Forum. There are people who are experiencing the same problems also using HP Gen10 servers and a MSA2050.

Re: MSA 2052 SAS MPIO issues failover cluster Server 2016
We have the same issue;
We follow the solution in this post:
- Update the HPE Smart Array controllers to 1.35 firmware:
- Update the Smartpqi driver to version 100.60.0.64:
https://downloads.hpe.com/pub/softlib2/software1/sc-windows/p406765183/v147589/cp035039.exe
After updating the firmware and driver, problem was solved
