UPS & ERM had liquid in them

We had a R3000 XR and R300 XR ERM (identifying number below) that failed because there was liquid in them. When the UPS and the ERM were removed a significant amount of liquid poured out of them. We soaked up the liquid an put the paper towels in a plastic bag. We weighed the bag and it weighed 12.2 ounces with the wet paper towels inside. We did not weigh the bag prior to putting in the wet towels however; a 55 gallon drum liner weighs about 3 oz. and 10 paper towels about 2 oz. so more than 6 oz. of liquid was in the units. The liquid did not appear to be battery acid because it did not burn the skin or damage the tile or carpeted floor.

How can liquid get in a UPS/ERM?
