Problemswith AIT 50 Gb Tapes

Is it normal that I have to clen twice a week the Tape Driver?, the sign for: "Error rate warning" appear very often. It's a Tape problem or a Driver problem or Software problem?. I have Novell SBS 5.1 with Server Version 5.00.09 and the Backup SW is Tape Ware for Netware 7.00 Sp2C. I use Tape HP Q1998A.
